Betaphonics - Midnight Love (Downsouth-Music)

From the vibrant deep house scene of South Africa comes Betaphonics and the “Midnight Love” single, courtesy of Downsouth-Music. Betaphonics are beat-maker Ernst Schoemaker and vocalist Danielle Hyem who create stylish house tracks that connect Johannesburg with the sultry sounds of San Francisco and New York City.

“Midnight Love” is a track complete with classic, soul-toned melodies, gentle piano and horn lines, romantic lyrics, and a late night, chilled vibe transmitting class and charisma. A pair of top notch remixes come courtesy of fellow South African producer and rising global house music talent Matt Prehn. Known for his work with live house music band Bang Bang as well as his solo singles for Baker Street, Headtunes, and his own Oh So Coy imprint Matt is certainly an in-demand talent. His Light Pass remix builds patiently with a persistent rhythm track, teasing vocal drops, and dreamy chord pads over a bubbling bass line. Matt’s accompanying Dark Pass remix changes things up for the after-hour aficionados, adding a chiming pulse, a descending low-end, and some tauntingly dramatic moments for just the right amount of dance-floor tension. Three prime cuts from Downsouth-Music, ready for action in DJ sets in any hemisphere.

Eternal City feat. Orlando Johnson - Come Back To Me (Hadogy Records)

Hadogy Records is a new label spearheaded by renowned Italian DJ Haldo. Haldo has a lengthy production resumé, contributing top tracks and remixes to the likes of Transport Recordings, Conya, Adaptation Music, and his own Proceed Records. With this debut release on Hadogy, Haldo joins fellow Italian DJ Gianni Sponti and musician Dom Scuteri to form Eternal City. Their individual experiences on the scene are impressive: Dom created Lemon Records in the 80’s and had chart success with his Black Connection and Time Passing projects, Gianni is an accomplished DJ and supervisor for various compilations including the La Maison series, and Haldo has been prolifically working with some of house music’s best, including remixes for legendary names like Tony Humphries and Victor Simonelli.

The track “Come Back To Me” features the vocals of a legend in his own right, Orlando Johnson. Orlando has been producing and singing on classic records since the late 70’s and is an integral player in Italian dance music history. “Come Back To Me” is presented here in multiple versions, all which excel in part due to Orlando’s powerful, soulful vocals. All of the Eternal City members contribute: Haldo supplies a charged, kinetic dance floor version, Mod Floor (AKA Dom Scuteri) gives the track a pulsing, big room flavor with transformed and effected vocals, and Gianni Sponti provides a deep, dark bump with tribal percussive elements in his mix. In addition, DJ Rey Pedroso, who began spinning disco records in the late 70’s and is a member of Orchestra Industrial Automatica, remixes “Come Back To Me” into a sparse, strictly after-hours track with a slinky low-end and a solid, deep dance floor drive. The most striking version, however, comes courtesy of Philip G. (AKA Philip Greenwill), a Rome-based producer obsessed with Detroit’s Tamla-Motown sound. Philip G.’s version lovingly embraces this retro sound, transforming “Come Back To Me” into a 60’s soul stomper worthy of The T.A.M.I. Show. All in all, it’s an impressive debut for Hadogy Records and certainly whets the appetite for things to come.

Graeme Park - “This is just absolutely wonderful. Highly infectious too. I love it so much that it’s getting a rare 5 stars from me. Superb!”
DJ Craig C (Pound Boys) - “Solid package! Best soulful house release I’ve heard in a long time. Well done!”
Grant Nelson - “Sexy!”
Joey Silvero (Distant People) - “The Gianni Sponti Remix … dreamy sounds and a heavy shaking bass line.”
Eddy Spirit (Spirit Crew) - “A thrilling afro-deep production built around percussive tribal-esque rhythms and heavenly synth melodies. Together with the spell binding vocals these create a hypnotizing feel.”
Edground (Grooveland Music) - “Ah! High music quality here. Love the new vibes and groove from Haldo.”
Stefan Popovic (DiscoTone Radio Show) - “Sponti’s remix is a liquid driver. Hypnosis is peaking in Pedroso’s version.”
Russell Deeks (This Is Why We Dance blog) - “Quality soulful vibes and a good range of mixes.”
Dacha (DeepLink blog) - “Haldo’s version works best for me, deep and spiced with tech sound, but the vocal is still the leader!”
Dino Michael (Godfathers Of House radio show) - “Holy crap this is killer! WOW! I can’t wait to play this … it’s gonna be huge for me on my show and in the clubs.”

Little Fish aka DJ DD feat. Suellen - All Goes Quiet (Discotheque Recordings)

To kick off 2012, Brazil’s Discotheque Recordings presents a new deep house single from Little Fish AKA DJ DD titled “All Goes Quiet,” featuring the vocals of Sao Paulo based singer Suellen. The original is an evocative piece of house music, drawing upon deep, percussive elements as well as pronounced 80’s influences in the synth work and vocal stylings. The combination creates a unique sound that should set it apart within a crowded DJ set. A dub of the original focused on the percussive elements, with bits of vocals filtering in and out, for an expressive and effective after-hours treatment. The first remix finds the Azee Project, led by Alexandre Zee of the Brazilian Soul Crew. taking things even deeper and into an exotic, Latin-tinged realm with his Afrokalimba Mix. The vocals glide above understated percussion, a steady bass line, and building synths as a jazzy vibraphone sound plays an addictive lead. Next up, Discotheque label don Marcelo Medeiros revs up the tempo for his Space Version, leaving the vocal hook of the song’s title intact while driving it with pulsing strings and a bustling low end.

About the artists:

When Daniel (DJ DD) decided to buy a used sound system to organize a friend’s party instead of renting it, he couldn’t have imagined he was buying his ticket to the electronic dance music scene. Born in the south of Brazil and DJing since the age of 14 - now 33 years old and based in São Paulo - Daniel quickly passed through many music styles to find house music and make it his specialty. Since then, DJ DD has traveled the world and produced many recordings, proving himself a true ambassador of the Brazilian way of house music.

Known for expertly programmed DJ sets that travel through the styles of house music, Marcelo Medeiros reveals his long career as broadcaster and manager on many different radio stations. This has given Medeiros an exposure to sounds and techniques that work as his base of inspiration. Today, Marcelo Medeiros is a leading house music name in Curitiba, a major city in Southern Brazil. He devotes most of his time coordinating a group of four radio stations, remixing in the studio, and taking care of his successful projects, DiscothequeRadio.com and Discotheque Recordings.

Alexandre Zee is Azee Project, a producer based in Taubaté, Brazil and member of the renowned Brazilian Soul Crew. He’s regarded as one of the more innovative house music artists in Brazil, with many productions influenced by Brazilian and African music mixed soulful and jazzy house grooves.
