Sunday Scoundrels - Ain't No Looking Back Feat. Audio Angel (Viva Recordings)

Sunday Scoundrels were formed out of San Francisco’s infamous Lower Haight house music scene of the early ‘00s. Consisting of Andrew Emil, Chad Mitchell, and Audio Angel, the trio set forth as a live band and studio production ensemble. Their debut, “Nothin’ Goin’ On,” was released to dance-floor acclaim in 2004 on Roam Recordings. A few years later the project disbanded, with Andrew moving on to Change Request, Chad focusing on Roam Recordings, and Audio Angel providing vocals on a number of records and enjoying a brief collaboration with STS9.

Ain’t No Looking Back” is an unreleased recording pulled from the trio’s heyday, finally delivered to the DJs by Viva Recordings. The tune harks back to the summery vibe of late-90s SF deep house, propelled by crisp, skippy beats, jazzy electric piano chords, and a funk-speckled bass line. Audio Angel’s soulful vocal sends the tune even further into the boogie zone, with thoughtful lyrics telling a story of living a life — and doing what you gotta do to survive — without shame or regret. This gem is ready to bless the latest of late nights as it sends positive flavors out to dance-floors all over.

Chance Packer featuring Terry Dexter - Rectify (Cha Cha Project Recordings)

San Francisco’s Chance Packer collaborates with Detroit’s Terry Dexter on “Rectify,” connecting Motor City soul with the gritty pulse of The Bay. This new single, released on Cha Cha Project Recordings, is in itself a ‘message to the soul,’ deeply and personally inspired by loved ones lost. Packer — who has worked with luminaries like Miguel Migs, Roy Davis Jr, and Juan Hoerni — lends his crisp, uplifting production to this certified house groover. Intricate drum machine programming and moving electric piano chords work together to fill the dance floor. Terry Dexter — with an illustrious career beginning two decades ago with Warner Bros. — provides an explosive and inspiring vocal performance. Her lyrics point to a spiritual reawakening of self love — a hybrid of house music and hand-raising testament. The remix comes courtesy of the legendary Jovonn (Dogmatik, Objektivity, Deeply Rooted House, and many others) who lends a touch of the soulful New Jersey ‘90s sound he’s known for. The mix further spotlights Dexter’s vocal and wraps it in a hypnotic dream of rhythm and melodic riffs. Jovonn’s dub takes things deeper still, bringing out his organ solo while Dexter’s effected vocals bubble up into the mix. “Rectify” is a spiritual music experience that ignites the magic deep within.

Jay Tripwire - Ika (Harmonious Discord)

This fall, sonic crevasses are filled with the unnerving sounds of spook and spoil. The once unsettling tones provide a feeling of nostalgia and a platform for music to tap into those sentiments. Arguably, one of the canonical artists when it comes to the witchy and abstract world of techno and house music is Canada’s Jay Tripwire. He is a household name in techno circles and has been producing music for over 25 years on powerhouse labels like Nordic Trax, Nervous, Viva and most recently through his own imprint Witching Hour. Harmonious Discord is happy to welcome Jay to the label with a very special release offered both digitally and via limited vinyl pressing (200 copies).

Ika is a collection of tunes with a common abstraction. Mature enough for a headphone listen but still relevant on the dance floor. The project starts out with “Wokd,” a dizzy concoction of slippery sound design and abrasive percussion. Next up is “Wormholes”, a penetrating acid house sonnet with whispered conversations and bin-rattling bass. Austin’s Jeff Scroggin reworks “Wormholes” into a tightly-shuffled — yet melodically-driven — selection for lighter moments in your warehouse adventure. Jeff’s take combines the haunting undertones of the original with powerful house essentials. The main event are two tremendous techno versions of “Ika” (the Japanese word for squid but sometimes used for certain cuttlefish). The RAW OG Vinyl Mix is a headstrong, percussive techno masterpiece reminiscent of earlier minimal techno selections. Everything is carefully placed, and tones bounce off each other while creating a syncopated space that moves the selection along. The additional “Ika” revisit plays off the same sampled themes of the original but with a formulated bass foundation giving it a pronounced strut missing from the original. These selections will take one on a journey into the uncharted mind of artist Jay Tripwire.

Andrew Duke (Andrew Duke In The Mix – “Great to have this superb new material from Jay.”
Harry Avers (NOICE! Radio Show) – “If Jay is not an Electronic Music God, he is at least a minor deity. Really nice work here.”
Taigo Onez (Bane Le’ Dex Radio) – “This is so righteous! Full support.”
Jon Fugler (XLNT Radio Show) – “Some lovely late night vibes here. Scroggin’s mix coming out on top by a whisker, and all are deeply enjoyable.”
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) “Jay always nails it, and here is more proof of his talent. Absolutely killer!”

Third Attempt - Reprise EP (Beatservice Records)

Third Attempt is Torje Fagertun Spilde, a 22 year old artist and DJ originally from Asker, just outside of Oslo. Now established in Tromsø, Norway, he is one of the young forces in the rising new generation of electronic producers from the birthplace of the Northern Disco Groove.

Third Attempt has a distinct and uplifting flavor, firmly planted in the smoother areas of deep house. His influences range from jazz to ambient, trip hop to classic house. Third Attempt’s Beatservice single, “Shoreline,” accumulated numerous accolades and tens of thousands of plays on various streaming platforms.

After three 2-track singles for Beatservice, it’s now time for a new four track EP from Third Attempt. The Reprise EP takes on a jazzier flavor than previous releases, illustrated by the funky guitar chords and sunshine vocals of the opening “Be Yourself.” The title track follows in spacier deep house territory, filled with layers of synths and melodic phrases ready to propel a dance floor. “Sol” wouldn't be out of place on an early Classic release with its chunky rhythms, Chicago-influenced keys, and squelchy effects. The EP gets back on a jazzy, groovier tip with the closing “Holdning” — this one will get the club moving at early doors, no doubt about it. Vibe on!

Chris Massey (Paper Recordings) – “Be Yourself is an incredible piece of Scandinavian style disco house. Lovely stuff!”
Rory Cochrane (Deep Site Recordings) – “Outstanding release. I love Third Attempts music, always on point.”
Dutchican Soul (Strictly Rhythm) – “It’s always a pleasure receiving tracks from Third Attempt.”
Tyler Stadius (Deepen) – “Great tracks. Funky, feel good class.”
Joey Silvero (Soul Elements Radio Show) – “Lovely feel. My kind of sound for chilling out.”
Carlo Gambino (Midnight Social Recordings) – “What an EP! Every one is a winner. ‘Be Yourself’ gets the top spot.”
Bruce Tantum (XLR8R) – “Lovely stuff. Really digging the laid back disco vibes on Be Yourself.”
Michael Fossati (Spirit of House) - “A very cool and sexy slice of dance floor goodness.”
DJ Osric (Black and Blue Show) – “This is top draw!”
Marcia Carr (Mi-Soul Radio) – “Sol is an uplifting track, good to brighten up dance club floors.”
