The Expert - Excursions (Cold Busted)

Straight out of Dublin comes the accomplished beat-maestro The Expert. Inspired by golden-era giants like The Rza, Pete Rock, and Large Professor — as well as new school titans Oddisee, Exile, and Eric Lau — The Expert got his start in the Irish Choice Prize-nominated duo Messiah J & The Expert. In 2015, The Expert broke out on his own with the renowned album Dynamic Drift and collaborations with the likes of Tanya Morgan, Zilla Rocca and Has-Lo.

Now The Expert arrives at Cold Busted with Excursions, a 20-track exploration of smooth instrumental hip-hop for the mind and soul. The album is a laid-back journey filled with intricate nuances and sublime rhythm constructions. There are moments of pensive beauty (“If”) and soulful jazziness (“Vacuum”) as well as evocative Latin-tinged moments (“Firmino”) and splashes of spacey moodiness (“Believe In This”). All in all, Excursions is a melodic trip from beginning to end, suitable for unexpected destinations and extended travels.

Esbe - Late Night Headphones Vol. 1 (Cold Busted)

Originally released on Dusted Wax Kingdom in 2010, Late Night Headphones Vol. 1 is the first part of a three part series from multi-genre producer Esbe. Esbe is based in Los Angeles, and through releases on Dusted Wax Kingdom, Cult Classic, and Cold Busted (which issued his acclaimed album Bloomsday), he’s proven his sublime beat-making acumen. Esbe’s forte is atmospheric instrumental production, incorporating cut-up jazz and soul samples mixed into an intricate and tasty sonic stew.

Heart’s Treasure” sets the tone with lost-in-time jazz snatches and bluesy vocals beaming in like a distant transmission, anchored by head-nod beats. This sound is developed through “Overflow,” evoking a playful summertime vibe as casual melodies and crunchy drums are layered through the tune’s progress. “Chant For Love” presents a tougher beat, offset by gentle guitar chords and a delightfully dreamy vocal hook. And “Dark Shade Of Blue” shows a futuristic side to Esbe’s production, utilizing pulsing pads and voice hits to soundtrack a lonely spacewalk.

These are just a few highlights from the 18 track Late Night Headphones Vol. 1. The entire album is exquisite, and with this re-release signaling the album’s first appearance on physical formats — including double vinyl, cassette, and CD — there will be a whole new slew of fans discovering Esbe’s sonic palette.

Es-K - ReCollection (Cold Busted)

Es-K (Essential Knowledge) was born in Holland, raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and currently lives in Burlington, Vermont. He made waves with his monthly Spontaneous Grooves releases, where a set of instrumental tracks are created in one sitting — 24 editions were released. Since then, Es-K has remained prolific with a plethora of self-released beat-constructions and albums for Cold Busted, including 2016’s acclaimed Passages. Es-K has a workman-like ethos of beat-making, with creative and top notch hip hop soundscapes constantly pouring out of his Vermont studio.

ReCollection, Es-K’s latest offering on Cold Busted, ups the ante with 24 evocative beat-based compositions representing a variety of moods and contexts. From the sparse, slightly ominous opener “Hydrgn” the listener knows this is a different kind of beats record. “Flrn,” for example, is deep and textural, owing influence to futuristic ambient as well as boom bap hip hop. There are also nostalgic, dream-like moments, such as the loping and exotic “Ptssm” and the mutant quiet storm funk of “Mngns.” The titles are indeed code for the elements, and the elements of Es-K’s production are just as varied. ReCollection is a chemistry course of smooth beat concoctions.

Azaxx (Tru Thoughts) – “Really good vibes. Like a meeting between Mo Wax, DJ Cam and Flying Lotus.”
Rory Hoy (Super Hi-Fi) – “Really lovely instrumental Hip-Hop beats here.”
Spike Deep (Rocka Fobic Music) – “Chilled trip hop mood with breaks. Loving it, will be using it.”

Simon Harrison (Basic Soul Radio Show) – “Some heavy tracks here. Loving “Ptssm” & “Mngns”.
Andy Wilson (Ibiza Sonica FM) – “Nice nodders for late night listening. Smokers delights!”
David Bassin (Freefall – KUSF in Exile) – “Mesmerizing.”
MadameFLY (mmRadio) – “These musical fantasies swirl and flow, bumping gently in your consciousness, getting your attention. This collection rewards the vibe-conscious listener.”

Defizit - Growth Spurt (Cold Busted)

Growth Spurt features 16 crucial Central Valley beats from Stockton, California’s Defizit. Released on the Cold Busted label, the album by the self-described ‘beatmaker/producer/taco truck aficionado’ delivers vinyl-poppin’ assemblages of rare samples, smooth loops, and tough drum licks. More developed than a mere beats-album, Growth Spurt simmers and flows through its sixteen cuts, providing a heady jam for late night cruising or musing.

Among the highlights are the lounge-jazz-turned-space-funk cut “Feed Your Head”; “Not The One” with its moody string motifs mixed over hip hop drops and scratches; the dreamy acoustic boom-bap of “Get Busy”; and the intricately arranged samples in the pensive “Money, Greed & Lust”. Laid-back and fresh, Defizit’s Growth Spurt is the gift that keeps on giving.
