Juan Hoerni - Unlimited Capacities (Cha Cha Project Recordings)

Los Angeles house music maestro Juan Hoerni strides into 2019 with a terrific new single for his Cha Cha Project Recordings imprint, “Unlimited Capacities.” The original is a bonafide groover, with sterling production and disco elements accompanying spare jazz-infused instrumentation. Sexy hints of vocals pepper the track as Scott Wozniak provides top notch keyboard work. It’s the sound of a sleek night ride through club land, no doubt.

Juan continues his history of legendary collaborations by enlisting none other than DJ Spinna on the remix. Spinna applies his down-and-dirty dance floor approach, bringing out some of the subtle Italo influences within the disco thump. An insistent rhythm is propelled by swirling organ, a bouncing bass line, and clav-like key stabs. This one’s blazing hot, and just in time for summer sessions.

Smok - My Soul (Viva Recordings)

Viva Recordings welcomes the Finnish producer Smok to the fold with My Soul, a stunning trio of deep house gems. Otherwise known as Juha Moisala, Smok hails from the exotic-sounding far north city of Oulu and has been active in Finland’s house music scene since 2002. From clubber to DJ to producer, Smok’s journey has found him recording for labels like Salted Music, DeepClass Records, Artizan Music, and Phat Elephant Recordings. Viva Recordings is just the latest stop on this emerging talent’s ascent.

My Soul” opens the EP, announcing itself with a swinging, crisp four-on-the-floor rhythm. Gentle chords, a percolating bass line, and string swells plant the seed for the filtered and arpeggiated melody that drives this lovely tune. The following track, “Chasing,” features dramatic piano splashes and a chunkier balance of beat and bass. It’s here to add a pensive but flowing flair to late night dance sessions. “With the Stars” closes the release on an even deeper note, hypnotizing with pulsing pads, deep subs, and a drum pattern accentuated with a clap that warmly hugs the stereo field. Smok’s My Soul is exceptional, a deep EP for thoughtful floors.

Andy Compton & Rogiérs - Feel Free (South African Remixes) [Viva Recordings]

Andy Compton and Rogiérs (pronounced Ro-ghe-ay) are back on Viva Recordings, returning with “Feel Free (South African Remixes)”. Andy first visited Viva in 2000 with The Rurals and his Farmyard Flavours singles and full length album, and “Feel Free” shows the Peng label head, prolific producer, and busy globe-trotting DJ still residing in the classiest of deep house digs. Miz-Dee kicks off this remix pack with a flowing rendition that sooths the soul with it’s meandering piano and floaty organ. Lelanga takes us on a journey reminiscent of Mr. Fingers with lush strings and keys, dubbing out the guitar and adding some spacious synth sounds. Both a remix and an instrumental remix by Lelanga are included in this pack. Once again, Andy and Co. inspire the dreamiest of dancefloor visions.

Jeff Swiff - Jeff Swiff EP (Vino Recordings)

Vino Recordings celebrates 16 years in operation and its Minneapolis scene with a double A-side release from Jeff Swiff. Jeff’s label with Christian James, Nicewon Recordings, which specializes in prime-time ‘no-coast’ house music sounds, and his seven-year-strong club night House Proud confirm Swiff’s dedication to the genre. His style is focused on the bouncing, ‘phat’ sound of house, evidenced by these two spot-on, driving dance floor stompers with unmistakable Midwest vibes. “Some Type Uh Way” shakes and rolls with delicious, jazzy keys, a crisp, swinging rhythm track, and a dreamy female vocal that pops in and out. “Wun Type Uh Way” presents a deeper and chunkier take, with pulsing, filtered loops and percussive disco vibes suitable for the latest of late nights.
