Dlay - Many A Moon (Sud Up Recordings)

Sud Up Recordings return with their nineteenth offering, putting the label’s very own Dlay in the hot seat once again. Entitled Many A Moon, the release is a deep, vibe filled house music affair with tracks that have plenty of bounce in their step.

Lead track “Better Not Bitter” features Dlay’s trademark deep, melodic take on the house sound, with an off-kilter melody and infectious vocal sample. “Vibes” is the second in line, a nod to the US West Coast sound with its percussive elements, spacey keys, and dubby bass line. The final of the originals is “That Confused Look” which ups the tempo slightly, its nagging stab providing the driving force to the track coupled with a cavernous bass line and some peculiar arpeggios. On remix duty this time are two producers who have influenced the Sud Up sound with their own productions over the years. First up is Asad Rizvi AKA Asadinho (RvS, Wrong), a man whose productions have been tearing up dance floors around the world for almost twenty years. He delivers a sleazier rework, taking the vocal and adding his own twist to proceedings. Last, but by no means least, 3am Recordings’ Al Bradley drops an explosive remix, using a vocal intro, dubby percussion, and a bass line / main hook combo that’ll make your head nod and your feet twitch. Al’s version twists and turns and evolves throughout in its own kind of funk, rounding this release off nicely.

Doc Martin - “Funky madness from the man known as Asdadinho!”
Robert Owens - “Cool tracks.”

Shane Johnson (Fish Go Deep) - “The groove, chords, and vocal snippet all come together well on ‘Vibes.’”
Tee Cardaci (Low Down Grooves) - “I’m feeling this! Another solid release from Sud Up. ‘Vibes’ is hot!”
DJ Di Costa (MoodyLushious Influences) - “Asad Rizvi’s Asadinho moniker makes a point here by showing how it’s done just damn right!”

Dlay - All Right / Sines (Sudup Recordings)

After a short break, London’s Sudup Recordings return with two new tracks of rhythmic deep house from label co-owner Dom Ahtuam AKA Dlay. Dlay has been busy with releases for Fortified Recordings, Midnight Social, and multiple Sudup productions. He’s also been working as one half of the duos Sketchy Beats (with Justin Berman), Invisible Menders (with Jane Fitz), and Untying the Knots (with Ketsa). The opening cut “All Right” is a nod to the sounds of early ’90s deep house, with its infectious stabs, rolling bass, and vocal samples, delivered in a fashion that wouldn’t sound out of place in Detroit’s techno heyday. “Sines” also has an old school feel to it, with a haunting melody, building percussion, and another cheeky vocal snippet which is married to some punchy, deep, wobbley bass tones.

“All Right” gets the remix treatment courtesy of Bittersuite AKA Matt Pond, a man who has been making a serious impact in the last few years with his slick productions and the Deepsystems parties that he runs in Brighton. Matt takes the cut to a different level turning in a proper dance floor workout with a cracking bass line and some solid beats. Fans of previous Bittersuite releases will not be disappointed with this. To compliment, the Toulouse-based Ooze (AKA Nans Teillard) returns to Sudup with a unique reinterpretation of “Sines.” It’s an almost lo-fi dubstep-meets-ambient sounding interpretation, but at house tempo, creating a mysterious, ominous vibe while still using the original hook in a nice style.

Johnny Fiasco - “Great vibe!”
Tom Lown (Savoir Faire / Lost My Dog) - “Very cool EP. I like all the tracks here, especially the Bittersuite remix. The EP as a whole has that kind of ‘real house’ vibe which is lacking in a lot of current releases.”
Sumsuch (Colour and Pitch) - “Strong release here … classic-sounding house music without being self consciously ‘throwback.’ Dope.”
Shane Johnson (Fish Go Deep, Red FM) - “Both mixes of ‘All Right’ very much doing it for me. Cracking riffs!”
Christos Kedras (Kapa Music) - “The Bittersuite mix for me … I’m feeling the deep hypnotic vibe and the nice fat bass.”
Hippie Torrales - “Nice package with some funky remixes.”
Robert Owens - “The Bittersuite remix … cool track!”
Jamie Topham (CDPool) - “A definite for house music connoisseurs … absolute quality release from Sudup with ‘All Right’ and ‘Sines’ both DJ essentials.”
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - “I’m feeling the title track most of all here … really cool tracky layered house. Top class!”
DJ Nova (Rodon FM, Greece) - “This is impressive! I’m freaking out over the future retro sound of ‘All Right’ and the classic Detroit techno feel of ‘Sines.’”
Michael Fossati (Spirit of House) - “I’m feeling the enticing Bittersuite remix … groovy rhythms combined with delectable melodies make this one a winner.”

Dlay - HeadBumps (Sudup Recordings)

Back after the well received OORS EP, Sudup Recordings return with a new deep house gem from label co-owner Dom Ahtuam AKA Dlay, entitled “Headbumps”.

Dlay’s “Headbumps” is a hypnotic deep house track featuring deep chords, spacey arpeggios and his usual intricate drum programming. This release shows a progression in his sound, while still being true to the style of his previous releases on Sudup.

The first remix comes courtesy of friend-of-the-label Tom Lown. Tom has been prolific over the last three years and shows no sign of slowing down, having had a recent split release with Harold Heath on Deepwit Recordings as well as releases on 3am and Lost My Dog. Here he delivers a quality reinterpretation of the original, adding a massive bass line, different percussion, and great use of the original hook.

To round the EP off, the final remix comes from a new member of the Sudup family, South Londoner Nota. His remix makes further use of that vocal sample and Dlay’s original parts, adding some squelchy acid action towards the end. After this great first outing expect more appearances from Nota on Sudup in 2013.

Alton Miller - “I am feeling the Tom Lown mix … niceness!”
Moodymanc - “Strong pack of solid groovers!”
Giom - “The remixes are ace!”
Ant Plate (Rhythm Plate / YSE) - “Proper low-slung deep house … nice. Tom’s drums are tops.”
Dave Mayer (Strictly Rhythm) - “Love Tom Lown’s remix … DOPE!”
Three (Hallucination Limited) - “Nota’s remix is working for me.”
DJ Rocca (Ajello) - “Super deepness, as I like.”
Tommi Bass (Rednetic Recordings) - “A nice deep sounding package… Tom Lown’s remix just steals the vote for my fave here.”
Tommy Largo - “Nice, deep grooves.”
Doc Link - “Feels good! I will be working this one in.”
DJ MFR - “Nice and groovy overall.”
Nutritious (Brooklyn Shakedown) - “So deep and lovely. Certain tunes wrap a big blanket of warm beats around you before pushing you back and forth across the floor. Tom’s mix does just that. Very nice, indeed.”
Bruce Tantum (TimeOut NY) - “Wow … great track, and two excellent variations on the theme. This a really rock-solid deep house EP. I’ll be playing all three versions … a lot!”
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - “Both Tom and Nota take the original vibe and work it into something very cool, but the original is the one I’m plumping for here … lovely solid deep house grooves all the way. Cracking stuff.”
Michael Fossati (Spirit Of House) - “The wicked remix by Tom Lown of this deep house gem is not to be missed.”

O.O.R.S - Callabonna Grove (Sudup Recordings)

After Sudup Recordings' well-received Message For You EP by Ooze, the label returns with a new artist signing: the London-based producer Matt Evans AKA O.O.R.S. A seasoned DJ, O.O.R.S recently entered the production realm with his “Solebeats” track, released on Julian Sanza’s Hearbeat Revolutions label and remixed by Pete Dafeet. O.O.R.S also self-released his promo-only OUTPUT series which garnered attention from heavyweights in the house music community. For his Sudup debut, O.O.R.S drops the infectious sound of “Callabonna Grove,” a rolling, deep track, with lush pads and some seriously intricate drum programming. This is a warm, summery sounding track with a tasty percussion section up front in the mix for added beach party rhythm fuel. The first in a trio of remixes comes courtesy of Moodymanc, the prolific 20:20 Vision Soundsystem member (also known as Dubble D). This mix plays on the percussive element, adding deep chords and hypnotic, looping crowd sounds just in the background. Dubby bits abound which help make this a stunning deep house effort. The second 20:20 Vision Soundsystem journeyman on this package, Julian Sanza (also part of Silver City), then jumps on board for the next revision. Julian’s mix features a bold bass line anchored on a solid four-on-the-floor swing, and a gorgeous build of synths, pads, and arpeggiations. Prime late night tackle here. With the final say is Sudup Recordings’ own Dlay, coming off his popular remix on the aforementioned Ooze release. A growling low end under a rhythmic shuffle drive this version’s rotating key stabs and shooting string notes, leading to an evocative, mysterious-sounding musical breakdown. These four tracks further push the Sudup sound, with high quality, unique deep house again delivered without fail.
