Dropzilla - Show You The Funka EP (Not So Fast Records)

Not So Fast Records is a San Francisco house music label founded in 2006 by DK Watts (Short Bus Kids) and DJ Naz Vartianian, meant as a sub-label of Bounce House Recordings. Releases from the likes of Giano, Short Bus Kids, p-rez, and Bon Johnson established the label in the bay area house community. After some moving and shuffling the renewed NSF Records is now under the helm of Fresno-based DJ/producer p-rez along with DJ Naz. The imprint is promptly revved up, as evidenced by this killer, action-packed house music release from San Jose-based DJ/producer Dropzilla.

Dropzilla is Richard DeSoto, a Spaniard settled in the bay era who found a profound influence in full moon parties and the sounds that characterized the DJ sets of the renowned Wicked crew. He is also co-owner of Household Recordings, recently rechristened as Household Digital, and has previously recorded for labels like Warbled, Espionage, Uppercutz, and Brazn Beats. This hefty six song release for Not So Fast, titled the Show You The Funka EP, features raw deep house with techno flourishes and a definite bay area influence. Included within are the warm pads and bass line growl of “Lay It Down,” “Hills On Fire” with its gritty groove and building synth work, the light-hearted “Saloon Talk” with its funky rhythm and prominent bass line, and the percussive, jackin’ drive of the EP’s title track. There’s plenty to dig in to here, and definitely some choice nuggets for funky, late night DJ sets.
