Best Mood Recordings is a new Philadephia-based house music label looking to promote new talents in the city’s scene alongside contributions from Philly’s established veterans. This first release features Philadephia up-and-comer Jeff Omega who has had a number of previous singles on the Selekta label. His debut EP was 2009’s Sweepology EP for Funkfield Recordings which contained the cool track “Pumping Chords.” Best Mood has decided to re-release this cut for its first issue, backed by a quartet of remixes courtesy of DJ/producers from Philly’s renowned Tigerhook crew: Phillip Charles,Chris Udoh, Deep C, and Rodrigo Ramirez.
The original “Pumping Chords” was inspired by Jeff’s image of a classically trained violinist transforming and merging into a futuristic bass robot. It’s a jackin’ tech-house cut that’s based on a heavy baseline and vibrant string chords, with layers of sound building to an explosive breakdown. Phillip Charles, with a long history of recordings for labels such as Ovum and Shaboom, supplies the first remix (or ‘Rewerq,’ as he calls it). This version darkens things a bit with more of a techno influence, bringing the ‘bass robot’ aspect to the forefront.Chris Udoh, a veteran of projects such as Wamdue Kids and labels like Fade and Urbantorque, provides his Sideswipe Remix which goes for some big room action complete with pronounced progressive and techno influences. The heavy, reverberating bass should serve to aptly move bodies about the dance floor. Deep C, another Wamdue Kids refugee now part of Tigerhook Corp, gives DJs a solid deep house mix that contains many of the original elements, building with a hypnotic melody that continues to the end. Finally, Tigerhook member Rodrigo Ramirez delivers a more tribal influenced take complete with jungle sounds and noises making for an exotic nightclub track. A melodic symphony section closes the remix gently landing the listener back from the future to the present day. All in all, these five tracks make for an inspiring set from Best Mood Recordings and a promising launch for the new label.
