Dugong - Dead Man Rising EP (Occultists)

“Emerging from the darkness, we found the light, a conscious and spiritual movement of esoteric knowledge and techno music.” The Berlin-based label Occultists proudly presents its first release, the Dead Man Rising EP by Filipino-Swiss-German producer Dugong, who brings us her spiritual exploration of the human experience. The extended digital release includes tracks by Dugong with several collaborations with Xenoscapes, Sweet Anomaly and Likeatree and remixes by Öona Dahl, Alicia Hush, and Mrs. Jekyll, a known techno producer whose identity will remain unrevealed: since the word ‘occultism’ is translated as hidden knowledge, Mrs. Jekyll’s real name will never reach the light of day. The vinyl release also includes a powerful vinyl-only remix by Jamaica Suk.

As the EP’s name and the symbolic artwork may suggest, Dead Man Rising is about understanding the seemingly final or negative events in life from an enlightened angle and perceiving them as something positive with a new hope or a possibility to grow. Death makes a way for life, challenges can be turned into blessings and edifying experiences, and without darkness, there would be no light to be shed into every corner. Dugong’s work calls for reconnecting with the self and the spirit and helps to find the ability to heal and save ourselves through the oldest art form which has been bringing people together: music.

On the EP, Dugong’s music pulsates in the techno heartbeat of the spiritual warriors (“Dead Man Rising”), sways in the downtempo of the warning calls about the danger for the human mind (“Evil Magician”) and contemplates in the deep dreams of our ancestors who could read the stars (“What May Come”). Dugong draws inspiration from various music styles and symbols which she boils together like secret ingredients of a reviving potion. The results are catchy, vital, and miscellaneous tracks full of high sensibility, layered vocals and tribal beats. The remixes are shrouded in a techno haze and have been conjured to unleash Dugong’s spirit on the dance floor.

Various Artists - Our Disco Vol. 2 (Discobox Records)

Discobox Records presents the latest installment of its Our Disco compilation series, presenting fresh music from the label’s already established roster in addition to new faces joining the cast. This time Discobox showcases artists from the label’s home base of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Opening the set, DCW (AKA Gustavo Castro) presents the immediately danceable “Red Shoes”. With a background playing in bands and exploring different musical styles Gustavo has managed to develop a unique approach to dance music. His debut on Discobox is a beautiful track using filtered synths, sharp bass line, and a classic, soul-stirring vocal that you just might recognize.

Next up, Gustavo Peluzo keeps the vibes deep with his flowing track “Return”. Besides being a prolific producer, Gustavo is also longtime resident DJ of the legendary Deputamadre Club and has developed superb skills both in DJ’ing and producing music.

The third track brings a returning name from the series. Juliano Maia joined the first compilation with great feedbacks with the excellent electro-inspired “Shake”. Now he presents “The Volume”, a work lovingly influenced by classic house music, with his own added touch.

Cury is a brand new name to the label, and was one of the members of Funky Fat band, recently going solo. His contribution – titled “Dope” – follows the pumping but deep tech-house style he plays in his sets, featuring a rolling bass line, sexy vocal snippets, and emotive synths.

Rounding out the package, DJ Daniel D goes straight into the funky acid house field with “Find A Place”. This potent club cut includes Daniel’s characteristic extra fat bass line and old-school 808 shots joining modern synths and drums.

From disco to house, to nu-disco, tech-house and classic old-school retro sounds … this is what Discobox is all about. Let’s disco!

Stereo 77 (Plimsoll Records) – “Killer release – 5 stars all around!”
Eric Davenport (Guesthouse) – “Every track is super fun to play. Awesome!”

Troja - Shanti (Wind Horse Records)

The latest release from Wind Horse Records dips once again into India’s fertile deep house movement, this time exposing Mumbai-based DJ / producer Troja to an awaiting global audience. The Shanti EP, consisting of three top notch house tracks, should handily further this goal.

“Shanti” leads the three originals on the EP, instantly mesmerizing with its ringing sitars and vocal chants led forward by a heartbeat-like rhythm. Tabla percussion flourishes and chiming synth melodies add to the deep house cut’s eastern appeal. This sound is expanded with “Ghats”, which adds mystical flute lines and churning layers of percussion to the dance floor equation. The track builds to an exotic bounce as plucked strings and a rising synth drone work to charm the listener. “Mantra” features a deeper, punchier rhythm and intriguing vocals of a magical persuasion. The hypnotic combination of the languid bass line and sparse beats make this one an after-hours treat for intimate venues.

Three fantastic remixes compliment Troja’s addictive originals. Berlin duo Gudio Schneider and Daniel Dreier (Highgrade, Moon Harbour) present their ‘Aztecs Explore India’ remix of “Shanti” which blends the original’s textures into a 14 minute masterwork. The voices and instruments fade in and out of the mix while the remixers’ solid house rhythm and melodic arpeggiation lines confidently anchor the production. Wind Horse Records’ own Kali G also tackles “Shanti”, going for a dubbier treatment that plays with splashes of percussion and echoed instrumentation to create a satisfying aural journey. Another duo, Bahrain’s Zone+ & Usif, are on hand for a version of “Ghats” that may be the deepest effort on the EP. Calming key pads and hand-drum heavy beats combine with smooth sub-bass and swelling snatches of the original cut. It’s a lovely remix, showing the depth of deep house through its continuing global exchange of sound and ideas.

Nick Warren (Hope Recordings) – “Bloody wonderful release, very very good!”
Bruno From Ibiza (Ibiza Global Radio) – “Nice ethnic vibes.”
Tyler Stadius (Deepsite) – “Amazing release! I love the out there, unique sounds and feel of these.”
Chris Fortier (Fade / Mindwarp) – “Great remix from Guido Schneider and Daniel Dreier.”
Larry Tee (Carnage Music) – “Really sweet.”
Hippie Torrales (Cyberjamz Radio) – “Digging this groove.”
Dean Serafini (JjazproJect) – “Mantra hits the spot very nicely.”
DJ Firefly (Couch Dancing) – “Wild, seductive cuts!”
Charl Chaka (Radio 1 Dubai) – “This simply awesome. Perfect for my HOUSEofAFRIKA sets.”
Jon Wesley (Music Goes On radio show) – “These are beautiful. I love Mantra, Shanti and the Zone + Usif remix of Ghats. I will play them all.”
