Homero Espinosa - Dance to the Rhythm of Love (Viva Recordings)

After a decade away, legendary west coast DJ troubadour Homero Espinosa returns to Viva Recordings for another pair of already classic-sounding deep house floor-fillers. "Dance To The Rhythm Of Love" is a shaker-shaking four-on-the-floor wonder, spreading vibes outward that are introspective and groove-worthy, not to mention its undercurrent of shimmering sexiness. A male vocal transmits the message as pads vibrate and bass lines bubble, giving it all for the love of music. Homero also delivers "Running Behind," a sublime stab at lowdown house elegance that gives a new glimpse at the old school. The rhythms are insistent as the synth chords flutter in the stereo field. As if that wasn't enough, David Harness, San Francisco's ambassador of deep house realness, rerubs "Dance To The Rhythm Of Love" into his sublime Afro Puff Mix. The beats are potent on this mix, deftly imbuing an afro-house flavor into the original's deep mixology. The build here is subtle but delightfully effective — a late-night dream comes true.

Andre Stepanian - Left It All (Friskybeat Records)

Friskybeat Records presents "Left It All," the latest single from jazz/flamenco guitarist and producer Andre Stepanian. Based in Vancouver, Stepanian has delivered a tropical dance groove that incorporates an acoustic nylon guitar for its main melody. Subtle vocal ad-libs introduce the track which are joined by swirling strings and guitar melodies. The Latin-house rhythm, funk-fueled bassline, and staccato electric piano chords shape the song's feel-good vibes.

Cool, driving percussion over more prominent kick and bass tracks flavor Luis Machuca's extended mix. The strings and pianos are jazzed-up a bit, giving the mix some added depth. In addition, the mix features a sultry female vocal playing call-and-response with the guitar melodies for some sleek deep house smoothness.

Casomado is on hand for a club-ready dub mix, stripped down with nuanced differences in the groove. A new bassline binds the percussion and pads to the bottom end while a groovy synth hook creates a haunting effect, wavering in and out of the tune. Affected vocals add texture while nodding to the original version's themes and motifs. Each track on "Left It All" is a dancefloor pleasure.

Rise Ashen (Balanced Records) – “Nice sounds, love the vocals and the groove. The dub is dope too. Full support here in Ottawa!”

Vanilla Ace (Toolroom) – “Luis Machuca’s Extended Vocal Mix is dope.”

Cyrus - Tribute To The Master (Smooth Agent Records)

Cyrus is an exciting new trio featuring Carmello Guarnera AKA Mello, da.loca, and Sean Smith AKA The Smooth Agent. They’ve come together to forge an organic twist on electronic dance music, building off sounds and traditions of the past to push Cyrus’s music into the future. This mission couldn’t be better expressed than on their new single, “Tribute to the Master,” which pays homage to Fela Kuti, the Nigerian King of Afrobeat. Featuring vocalist Tosha Marie, the song includes pounding layers of rhythm, melodic horns, staccato guitar, gliding electric piano chords, and Tosha’s expressive, soulful voice. It’s a rousing affair.

Four fantastic remixes back “Tribute to the Master,” starting with the Tribute Groove Mix from David Harness (Moulton Music, Vega). Focusing on the magic of the musical instrumentation, Harness lays down a deep kick drum that guides his version into dancefloor bliss. Sean Smith (The Smooth Agent) is next, paring down the track a touch but still keeping the rhythmic interplay and Tosha’s lovely vocals. Welsh DJ/producer Paul Lyons (Quantize, Marivent Music) gets in the tribal zone with his deep Tribe Vibe mix, and Cleveland’s Karu (Intimate Venues) transforms “Tribute to the Master” into a sleek late night groover. This pack is filled with exquisite, Afro-inspired sounds, all ready for DJ deployment.

Soulfuledge (Quantize) – “Sublime stuff from David Harness on here. This one’s definitely for me.”
DJ Pope (Poji Records) – “This entire package is hot.”
Col Lawton (Deep Fix Recordings) – “David’s remix is sooo nice.”
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle radio show) – “Wonderful remixes celebrating a legend. The Karu mix is my fave. Full support.”
DJ Jazzy L (Jazzy Lounge Radio) – “It only took a couple bars before my feet started moving. On Point.”
