Lauren Flax - In the Night (feat. Jo Lampert) (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings gets deep with Lauren Flax’s new single, “In the Night (feat. Jo Lampert)”. Miami-born legend Mystic Bill takes the track on an even further journey with his entrancing remix.

Lauren Flax, originally from Detroit, is a NYC-based DJ, songwriter, and producer. She is currently a member of the band CREEP with long-time collaborator Lauren Dillard and holds a monthly party with Gavin Russom called C//ty Club in Brooklyn. Flax was also the Fischerspooner tour DJ from 2008 - 2011. Her debut single, “You’ve Changed”, was released on DJs Are Not Rockstars, an indie dance label run by Mark Davenport and Alexander Technique and featured vocals by Sia of Zero7 fame. In 2010, Sia re-recorded the track and released it as her first single from the album We Are Born.

Flax is no stranger to Get Up Recordings, having remixed Alinka’s track “You’re Basic” back in 2014. “In the Night” sees her really honing in on her unique abilities as a songwriter. The lyrics were made for vocalist Jo Lampert’s voice to take full advantage of, and she does so, one hundred percent. The bass line and echoing effects of the keys really add depth to this already dark late-night track. Lauren also throws in the Flaxy Dub for good measure, with the same vital key elements as the original and just as smooth.

Taking on the remix duties for the release is Mystic Bill. His introduction to the dance music scene began during his teen years while growing up in Miami. While working at Flamingo Record Pool, which was run by Bill Kelly (WMC fame) and Richard McVay, he discovered house music. The promos with acid and house mixes from Chicago really captured his attention so much that he moved there to be a part of the happening scene. He held residencies with many of the now Chicago legends -- Johnny Fiasco, Ralphie Rosario, Derrick Carter, and Mark Farina. He started to produce, with his first remix being for Kay Ladrae’s track “Lack of Love”, and has had releases on Trax Records, Relief, and Swing Street. Mystic Bill also has future releases coming out on Classic Music Company, Rong Music, and Snuff Traxx. For his remix of “In the Night”, he takes it on a twelve-minute-plus journey and really drives it home with the constant beats of the percussion and repetition of the beautifully haunting vocals. He allows the listener to get lost in the music, but doesn’t let them know that twelve minutes have passed and that is the real magic of it.

Christy Love - Paradise (Get Up Recordings)

Next up from Get Up Recordings is the tech house slammer “Paradise” from label owner Christy Love. The package includes the original and two remarkable remixes by fellow NYC DJs and producers The Carry Nation and Lauren Flax, each adding further depth to the release.

Christy Love has been immersed in the house music scene for more than two decades and is one of the most sought-after DJs in NYC because she consistently destroys dance floors all over the city and beyond. Her distinct sets are comprised of a clever mixture of classic and modern house bursting with driving beats and funky bass lines, playing a pivotal role in defining the current underground sound of New York. This DJ prowess, combined with her production work as House of Stank with longtime collaborator W. Jeremy and the success of their label Get Up Recordings, has transformed Christy into a house music triple threat. Her production work on “Paradise” is characteristic of her other work; it has a big, thumping bass line complimented by a driving house percussive beat. She cleverly uses vocal samples to highlight elements of the track. The orchestration of the organ stabs, reminiscent of the '90s industrial rave sound, really becomes hypnotic and makes this into a lovely big room house track.

First up on remix duties is The Carry Nation, a NYC-based production team comprised of Will Automagic and Nita Aviance. Both noted producers and DJs on their own in the NYC and London scene, their collaboration brings a unique, stripped down version of “Paradise” to the table. The remix is a true 'bonus beats' type of track with heavy drums, claps, rides, and cymbals. The quick, choppy use of rhythm is The Carry Nation’s signature style.

The second remix of “Paradise” comes courtesy of Lauren Flax, a DJ, songwriter, and producer from NYC. Flax is currently a member of the band CREEP with long-time collaborator Lauren Dillard and was the official Fischerspooner tour DJ from 2008 - 2011. Her debut single, “You’ve Changed”, featured vocals by Sia of Zero7 fame. Flax’s remix is a beautiful departure from the original and The Carry Nation’s addition. She gets real deep and warm with her complex take on “Paradise”. Using the strong elements of the original, she adds analog bass and hits that make it into a full on dreamy, melodic track all its own.

DJ Heather - "As usual, fantastic stuff from Christy Love."
Vanilla Ace - "The original is great and I like the Lauren Flax remix for the warm up."
Lupe Fuentes (Inhouse Records / Nervous Records) - "My favorite is the original."
Hard Ton (Gigolo / Permanent Vacation) - "The Carry Nation remix is the one for me."
Alinka (Classic Music Co. / Twirl Chicago) - "I love the whole release … great work!"
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "That Carry Nation remix is sexy! I love the original, too."
DJ Craig C (Peace Bisquit / Pound Boys) - "This is what I'm talking about … "Paradise" is some serious stuff! That will get rocked."
Pat Lezizmo (Conya Records / Karmaloft) - "Lauren Flax brings the right emotion in the track. I love it!"
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "Really cool … all three have quality, but the Carry Nation version is an original slice of beatiness. It's good for when you want to break the 4-on-the-floor flow and throw some jerky-movements onto the dance floor."
Sumsuch (Colour and Pitch / Mega Jawns) - "The original is great, but the deep vibes on the Lauren Flax mix win it for me."
Sam Hopkins (AccuRadio, Chicago) - "Both of the remixes are stellar. I love the deep, almost balearic Lauren Flax mix, and the Carry Nation mix is a tech-y groover."
Louis Hughes (6th Sense Music) - "Peak time tech-house right here. The remixes are nice but it's all about the original for me."
Corbin Dooley (Electric Feel Radio Show) - "Grooves to get us ready for the beach parties. I really like the morning vibe of the Lauren Flax remix."
Kosta (Vibe FM / Dance FM) - "Possibly the best single I've heard this year. The house is strong with this one!"

Alinka - Basic EP (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings continues to establish themselves as forerunners of underground house with the Basic EP from Chicago’s Alinka. The release contains two original tracks straight from the Chicago house scene, “You’re Basic” and “Reaching,” with accompanying remixes from wizard producers Lauren Flax and Lil’ Mark.

Alena Ratner, aka Alinka, fell in love with house music in the ’90s like many growing up in Chicago. In 2001 she landed the opening slot at Justin Long’s renowned .Dotbleep night at Smart Bar, which she played at regularly until 2009. She began producing in 2003, releasing a multitude of tracks on labels such as Igloo Recordings, Greenhouse, D’Lectable, and Smart Bar’s Area DJ Records. Alinka began touring globally, playing gigs throughout the U.K. and Europe shortly afterwards.

The last two years have been particularly fruitful and rewarding for Alinka, due in large part to her friendship and musical partnership with singer, DJ, and producer Shaun J. Wright. Their first EP, Twirl Vol.1, named after the monthly party they run together, was promptly signed to Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s esteemed house label Classic Music Co. The EP’s lead single, “Love Inspired,” was featured on the Defected Records Compilation Defected Presents The Closing Party Ibiza 2013 as well as Defected’s In The House Radio show. In addition, Alinka and Wright have collaborated on a plethora of remixes for Hi Fashion, The Carry Nation, JD Samson & MEN, and Baby Alpaca. Alinka’s most recent remixes include Eli Escobar’s track “Anotha Luv” for Get Up Recordings, and Asher Diamonds’ “Got to Know” for NBD Music Co. The Basic EP is her first original solo release.

The first track off the EP, “You’re Basic,” really showcases a producer who was born and raised in Chicago. Influences like the 303, Adonis, and Trax Records all contribute to the fierce groove. The voice in the track, Alinka herself, lays down the rules of the game in a steady command and tells all the others ‘you’re basic.’ The remix of “You’re Basic” comes courtesy of Lauren Flax, a DJ, songwriter, and producer from NYC. Flax is currently a member of the band CREEP with long-time collaborator Lauren Dillard and was the official Fischerspooner tour DJ from 2008-2011. Her debut single, “You’ve Changed,” featured vocals by Sia of Zero7 fame. Flax’s remix strips down the track even further where it just becomes the most basic elements of dance music: drums, bass, and voice. Flax’s streamlining of the track really packs a full dance floor punch.

The second original cut of the EP, “Reaching,” is a jackin’, ethereal house track. This is true house music in the sense that the keys, the kick, and the claps make up the rhythm nicely. There is a sprinkle of vocals that ride along with the eerily beautiful lead, giving the track a unique appeal. Veteran UK DJ and producer Lil’ Mark takes the cut one step deeper. He adds a bit of funkiness and puts his hypnotic house mark on “Reaching” to get the listener ‘into the sound.’ Mark has had a deep connection with the Chicago house scene after living and touring with Derrick Carter in 1997. Mark’s bumpin’ signature style can be heard on releases from Classic Music Co., MFF, Bump, Leftroom, and Hot Waves.

Another great package from Get Up Recordings, this one is anything but basic.
