Deniz Reno - Sometimes / Blue Eyes (Lucky Sun Recordings)

Lucky Sun Recordings presents the lovely vocals of Deniz Reno for the label’s eighth release, containing the smooth deep house wonders “Sometimes” and “Blue Eyes”. The Canadian singer has found her voice on big releases for the likes of Armada Records and Black Hole Recordings, and has now stepped into the realm of stylish deepness led by the guiding hand of Lucky Sun. London’s Tom Lown produces as Lucky Sun and wraps Reno in a sophisticated soulful sound in his versions of both tracks, with the US west coast deep house sound of the 2000s as an influence. “Sometimes” features a more direct four-on-the-floor and upfront vocal, giving the late night house music lounges some serious ear candy. “Blue Eyes” has more of a downtempo edge, but with exquisitely lush and melodic layers that would soothe any savage beast. Sub Orchestra, the project of Israel-via-Moscow producer Yuliya, also ambitiously tackles the tracks, offering a more pared-down deep house feel filled with crisp rhythms, swirly pads, and warm accompaniment to Deniz Reno’s melodies. Lucky Sun Recordings and Deniz Reno are here to breathe some warmth into everyone’s winter.

Manny Cuevas - Meet Me At the Leather Disco EP (Get Up Recordings)

Kicking off the releases for Get Up Recordings in 2017 is the Meet Me At the Leather Disco EP, coming from Florida’s own techno and house music pioneer Manny Cuevas (aka, DJ M-TRAXXX). The EP contains three originals and two remixes of the title track from NYC’s Rhenalt and Toronto’s Carlos Fuerte.

No stranger to the Get Up Recordings family, Manny Cuevas has worked with label owners W. Jeremy & Christy Love since 2009 when he was the A&R person for acid house creator DJ Pierre’s label, Afro Acid Digital. Originally from South Lorain, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, Manny settled into the unsuspecting City Beautiful (Orlando) in 1985. He quickly became a force for pushing the sound of Chicago house and Detroit techno on Rollins College’s local station, WPRK 91.5FM, broadcasting his show from 1989 until 1997. Expanding beyond showcasing himself, he’d host many world-renowned DJs and producers, including Carl Craig, Roy Davis, Jr., Armand Van Helden, DJ Sneak, DJ Duke, and frequent mixes from DJ Pierre. As DJ M-TRAXXX, Manny has the toured the US as well as the UK, Central and South America, Germany, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh. On the production side in 2009 he was remixing Louie Vega, DJ Pierre and his mentor, Junior Vasquez. Manny would also earn his way onto Vasquez’s Generation Next compilation on Tommy Boy’s Silver Label. Two years later his original production “House Thunda” was included in Snuff Crew’s benefit compilation for Japan. The title track, “Meet Me At The Leather Disco”, is a deep, dark, whistle-blowing, late night jam. Pumping alongside of that is the “Jackin’ Tha 707” beats track. Rounding out the EP is “M-TRAXXX Anthem–3 (featuring PlusDeep)”, which takes a beautifully different direction with its old school house melody and atmospheric feel.

First up on remixes is Rhenalt, head honcho of Rebel Eye Records. He is a world-traveled DJ, playing in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, as well as every major venue in NYC. Rhenalt has released tracks on DJ Pierre’s Afro Acid Digital, Todd Terry’s In-House, Nervous, as well as Get Up. Rhenalt’s remix puts a dark acid twist on the title track, lending itself to be a late night floor-filler.

Next up on remix duties is Carlos Fuerte. As a fixture in the Toronto house and techno scene, he stepped away from the industry and has recently had a resurgence. The remix he delivered here is amazing. He takes the dark elements from the song and spins them into something beautifully positive.

Atish (Desert Hearts) – “This EP is so old skool I couldn’t refuse.”
Andy Riley / Inland Knights (Drop Music) – “I quite like the Rhenalt Remix.”
Kid Enigma (Great Lakes Audio) – “This release is solid.”
DJ P-Rez (Not So Fast Records) – “I have room for every track on this release. Every single track is quality.”
Lupe Fuentes (Inhouse Records) – “Original 6am mix is grooving!”
Kane Ian (Dustpan Recordings) – “Nice stuff on M-TRAXXX Anthem 3, and I’m also digging Carlos Fuerte’s mix of Meet Me…”
Dean Facer (Resident Advisor) – “All are superb in their own way. Great release.”
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) – “Very cool EP, particularly the Rhenalt Remix of Meet Me … and the Jackin’ the 707 cut, wicked stuff!”
Kosta (Vibe FM) – “I have to say that Rhenalt’s remix does the trick for me. Fresh!”
Andrew Emil (Four Play Music) – “Really LOVE the Get Up and Love Mix. Very spiritual, will definitely support this.”

Lucky Sun: a New Single from Deniz Reno and a New DJ Mix

Lucky Sun Recordings has a treat planned for discerning deep house fans, with the eminent release of Deniz Reno's double A-side single "Sometimes" / "Blue Eyes".

We asked one of the single's producers – and Lucky Sun head honcho – Tom Lown how this beautiful release came about:

"I was first introduced to Deniz a couple of years ago by Richie Hartness from UM Records. The project we had started didn’t come to fruition but a few months down the line we decided to finish what we had started, which was “Blue Eyes (The Lucky Sun Mix)". Deniz had already written and recorded her vocals in Canada which she sent over to me and I produced the music in London. The same happened with the other song “Sometimes” – she did the vocals and I did the music. We had two great tracks here but to get another spin on it, Deniz had Russian based producer Sub Orchestra produce his own interpretations of the songs which completed the four track EP. The Lucky Sun mixes have a deeper, smoother sound while the Sub Orchestra mixes are still deep but a bit more electronic and dance floor orientated. It only made sense to release it on my label. I’m also going to be doing a remix for Deniz on her forthcoming EP for Little Noise Records.

Tom also has a great new DJ mix that you can listen to here:

Tom gives us the scoop on the mix: "The winter warmth mix is an attempt to put some some really warm, summery records together in the middle of cold winter! It’s deep, has balearic moments, and is at a nice tempo. It features two of the songs from Deniz’s EP and my remix of Johannes new track “Follow Me” which is coming out on Lucky Sun Recordings in March. There's a host of real gems on there. Hope you enjoy."

Deniz Reno - Sometimes / Blue Eyes is released on 24th January on Lucky Sun Recordings.

Mister T. - The Return Of The Classic (Cold Busted)

The Return Of The Classic is the return of Greek beat-master Mister T. to the Cold Busted label, and he certainly explores a classic sound. Based in Athens, Greece, Mister T. has long been transmitting the jazzier side of downtempo hip hop, with top notch jams that are soulful, swinging, and undeniably funky. This album is the latest in a string of Mister T. collections on Cold Busted … as prolific as Mister T. is, his quality never falters and the tunes don’t disappoint. The Return Of The Classic contains a multitude of magical dance floor moments, including the bluesy skank of “Break My Back”, the breakdance funk of “Put The Needle On”, the high energy horn section groove of “Elephant”, and the title track’s shuffling big beat and stew of crafty samples. The Return Of The Classic has beats and funk for days, with Mister T. delivering a beloved old school sound to today’s jazzbos. Hold on tight!
