Sunday Slim - Take Me Back - The Selekta Remixes (Selekta Recordings)

Sunday Slim is a Northern California blues musician with a twist — he builds his songs live using a BOSS RC-505 Loop Station by beatboxing the drums, percussion, bass, and effects. Then Slim deftly transmits his harmonica and vocal skills on top, resulting in a super-stew that ’s one part blues, one part funk, another part electronic, and all GOOD.

Sunday Slim’s “Take Me Back” is a wicked track that, when heard by the Selekta Recordings team, was begging for the remix treatment. Thus The Selekta Remixes, featuring familiar label staples and a couple of new-to-the-fold producers.

Rusty Belicek from All Good Funk Alliance has combined forces with Isaac Freed (bass) and Paul LLoyd (banjo!) to become Rockmaster and the Boys. Their remix harks back to the classic big-beat sound, combining Slim’s vibe with some block rockin’ beats. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels aka DRS bring “Take Me Back” into the electronica-dub-influenced realm, delivering some powerful stuff even at a low tempo. Scottie Soul’s version is a blunted-out downtempo jam with shimmering percussion effects and loping jeep beats. StickHouse Recordings’ Brian Steckle engineered the original “Take Me Back,” and revisits it for his StickMix — the cut is transformed into a peak-time breakbeat banger. More breaks, on the almost glitchy side, invade the remix by DJ EFX which the label accurately refers to as ‘UltraFutureFunk.’ Last but hardly least, Selekta’s own DJ Dennis closes things out in a deep house style, blending Sunday Slim’s dexterous harmonica riffs with a delicious beats-and-bass bounce.

Five Alarm Funk feat. Bootsy Collins - We Play The Funk (CMC & Silenta Remix) [Roca Records]

In 2018, Five Alarm Funk, the Vancouver-based world-trekking funk ensemble, collaborated with the legendary Bootsy Collins for “We Play the Funk.” Five Alarm Funk joined a dizzying list of Boosty-enhanced bands and collaborators, including James Browns’ The JBs, Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Daft Punk, and so many more. “We Play The Funk” features the electrifying horn section assault of Five Alarm Funk and Bootsy’s undeniable bass guitar riffs and vocal magic. This one deserves all caps: FUNK.

CMC & Silenta, the exceptional funky breakbeat duo from Germany, have gotten their skilled mitts on “We Play the Funk” and remixed it for a new decade. The horns signal the start of this party over go-go style rhythms and percussion. Then the full beat comes in along with Bootsy’s funky declarations — no dancefloor within range can resist the explosive result. Reggie Got Beats is busting out from the south shore of the Trondheim Fjord, bringing his funky electronic Nordic disco to the masses. A triple threat — DJ, producer, and drummer — Reggie’s tunes jump among the spaces found between soul, house, R&B, and disco. Since 2015, Reggie Got Beats has turned heads and delighted ears through releases for the likes of Diskorama, NDYD, Paper Recordings, and Midnight Riot and his work with RGB Unit, his live band. Reggie Got Beats is a force to be reckoned with — on the dance floor!

Reggie Got Beats returns to Beatservice with “On The Floor”, a track that first appeared as a 2016 Bandcamp-only release on Diskorama. Here it’s been overhauled, remastered, and re-remixed for the year 2020. “On The Floor” is a groovy afrobeat-inspired deep disco number featuring Rohey Taalah singing a familiar and rousing refrain. The instrumentation percolates, with bouncy bass lines, filtered synth pads, and gritty rhythms. Included is original extended Dub version from Ralph Myerz (Klik Records, Disco Piñata) and a brand new mix from Tromsø’s own Third Attempt (Beatservice, Paper Recordings). All Good Funk Alliance - Let's Execute (Super Hi-Fi Recordings)

The dynamic duo is back! All Good Funk Alliance return to Super Hi-Fi Recordings with Let’s Execute, a four-song EP filled to the brim with prime time funkiness. The Alliance — comprised of Frank Cueto and Rusty Belicek — have delivered their brand of tightly produced electronic jams for over 20 years and Let’s Execute is another essential piece in their funky equation.

The title track sets things off with potent mid-tempo breakbeats and silky synth action. Enter the formidable voice of Big Stuff whose Big Daddy Kane-style flow connects the old and new schools. Paying homage to their DC-locale, the Funk Alliance next deliver “Control Your Roll” which is anchored in swinging go-go style rhythms. Black Masala adds some serious horns, creating a cool call-and-response with the synth lines and the overall groove. Vocalists Heidi Martin and the late Mustafa Akbar join the Alliance on “To The People,” a soulful cut with an uplifting, positive message — much needed in these times. The more up-tempo, four-on-the-floor “That Chord” closes out the EP, ending things on a stylish rush-to-the-dancefloor tip. Top jams successfully executed!
