Five Alarm Funk feat. Bootsy Collins - We Play The Funk (CMC & Silenta Remix) [Roca Records]

In 2018, Five Alarm Funk, the Vancouver-based world-trekking funk ensemble, collaborated with the legendary Bootsy Collins for “We Play the Funk.” Five Alarm Funk joined a dizzying list of Boosty-enhanced bands and collaborators, including James Browns’ The JBs, Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Daft Punk, and so many more. “We Play The Funk” features the electrifying horn section assault of Five Alarm Funk and Bootsy’s undeniable bass guitar riffs and vocal magic. This one deserves all caps: FUNK.

CMC & Silenta, the exceptional funky breakbeat duo from Germany, have gotten their skilled mitts on “We Play the Funk” and remixed it for a new decade. The horns signal the start of this party over go-go style rhythms and percussion. Then the full beat comes in along with Bootsy’s funky declarations — no dancefloor within range can resist the explosive result. Five Alarm Funk, Bootsy Collins, and CMC & Silenta: a match made in funky heaven.

Jayl Funk & Quincy Jointz Ft. Georges Perin - Give Me Love (Søndae Records)

Jayl Funk and Quincy Jointz are long-time legends in the nu-funk movement, known together for their perennial dancefloor staple “Fresh Funky Dude,” recorded back in 2009. At long last they’ve joined forces once again for another blazing track sure to also join the ranks of nu-classics. “Give Me Love” features the powerhouse vocals of Greek soul singer Georges Perin over a sexy non-stop disco groove. The tune is uplifting and catchy, filled with piano riffs, slinky bass, and vibes for days. It’ll turn a frown upside down.

A pair of top notch remixes propel the tune in exciting new directions. Jack & Jointz, the duo of Quincy Jointz and Thorsten Walter, dip “Give Me Love” in smooth, funky soul waters — the crisp drum track, expressive keys, and sax riffs bring the foundations of the song further to the fore. The second mix is courtesy of Andy Bach (Young Society Records) who adds a rousing soulful house music flavor. This one’s perfect for the late night crowd, building elegantly over 4-on-the-floor beats as George Perin drives home the song’s hooks. Another fantastic single from the always on-point Søndae Records.

Mined Music - In Pieces / Under My Spell (Søndae Records)

Mined Music is Michael Newell, a Munich-based DJ and producer known for his keyboard prowess and funky productions. He also one half of Mined & Forrest, releasing top tracks for labels like Breakbeat Paradise and Timewarp Music. Mined Music now returns to Søndae Records for a fantastic double A-side single, “In Pieces” / “Under My Spell.” These two tunes are full of magical vibes.

In Pieces” is a trippy and operatic hip-hop-flavored tune with a ‘90s-style beat. After contributing vocals to Mined Music’s previous Søndae release, Maree Lawn returns with another captivating performance. She’s assisted by US-based rapper Cleva Thoughts who spits raw lyrics in a riveting old school style — an excellent alternative to the auto-tune overload of today. There’s also an air of mystery, which carries on in “Under My Spell.” This cut slows things down with a laid back ambient groove. UK-based singer Amanda Power expresses the power of desire with a lovely smooth flavor and a subtle, dark twist. The emotive pad movements and synth choirs are joined by Dara Zusko, a professional classical violinist. Her evocative melodies send the listener on a luxurious, deep dive.

Jon Fugler (Fluke) – “Solid selection. In Pieces is just edging ahead for me, I like the classic rap style.”
Rory Hoy (Super Hi-Fi) – “Great pair of tunes!”
FineCutBodies (Chi Records) – “Great pop music with great production.”
DJ Jazzy L (Jazzy Lounge Radio) – “Under My Spell has me under it’s spell.”
Jon Wesley (Music Goes ON Radio Show) – “I love both, but I think ‘Under My Spell’ is the favorite. I’ll play them both for sure.”
Double-D (Funky Fresh Radio Show) – “Nice one, In Pieces is a great underground tune.”
Sharif Galal (Triple J Radio) – “Powerful and gripping! One of the best releases of this year.”
DJ Clairvo (Tilos Radio, 90.3) – “Sounds amazing! Kinda dark, yes so dope. Full support.”

Jack & Jointz feat. Ashley Slater - Holy Water (Søndae Records)

Søndae Records is back with the second single from Jack & Jointz. The duo — comprised of German producers Quincy Jointz and Thorsten Walter — have teamed up again with legendary singer Ashley Slater. Ashley, of course, is known as the vocalist for Freak Power, as well as his supercharged collaborations with Rory Hoy. He’s become a regular (virtual) fixture in the Jack & Jointz studio, providing vocals for five songs on their debut album. And now it’s time for the latest — “Holy Water.”

“Holy Water” is a break-up song. But how does a break-up song sound with a singer like Ashley? One can guess it won’t be in schmaltzy ballad territory. Instead it’s something groovy, with funky bass and chunky mid-tempo beats. London-based Lucia La Rezza adds beautiful violin melodies for extra musical layers over Jack & Jointz' crisp production. And Ashley’s distinctive vocals excel — emotive and affecting, it’s the sound of a pro at the top of his game.

The single also includes an instrumental for bonus DJ action. Get soaked in some “Holy Water!”
