Jack & Jointz feat. Ashley Slater - Holy Water (Søndae Records)

Søndae Records is back with the second single from Jack & Jointz. The duo — comprised of German producers Quincy Jointz and Thorsten Walter — have teamed up again with legendary singer Ashley Slater. Ashley, of course, is known as the vocalist for Freak Power, as well as his supercharged collaborations with Rory Hoy. He’s become a regular (virtual) fixture in the Jack & Jointz studio, providing vocals for five songs on their debut album. And now it’s time for the latest — “Holy Water.”

“Holy Water” is a break-up song. But how does a break-up song sound with a singer like Ashley? One can guess it won’t be in schmaltzy ballad territory. Instead it’s something groovy, with funky bass and chunky mid-tempo beats. London-based Lucia La Rezza adds beautiful violin melodies for extra musical layers over Jack & Jointz' crisp production. And Ashley’s distinctive vocals excel — emotive and affecting, it’s the sound of a pro at the top of his game.

The single also includes an instrumental for bonus DJ action. Get soaked in some “Holy Water!”

Rory Hoy feat. Ashley Slater - Hey Everybody! (Super Hi-Fi Recordings)

After five acclaimed albums for Howlin' Records and singles for the likes of Breakbeat Paradise and Skint's Under 5's imprint, Rory Hoy has teamed up with Ashley Slater (Freak Power) to unleash "Hey Everybody!" through Super Hi-Fi Recordings. Already proving to be one of the hottest funk / soul bangers of the summer, "Hey Everybody!" has received early accolades from Craig Charles of the BBC's Funk & Soul Show, Fake Blood ("super slick"), and big beat legend Freddy Fresh ("dope tune!"). The cut is a rollicking, organic funk-disco number that seamlessly meshes Nile Rodgers / Chic-style guitar riffs with sexy vocals recalling Sly Stone. It's a combination made in heaven … and for dance floors here on Earth.

The pack of hot shot remixes include a stomping version by Skint Records legend Dr. Bone, his first remix production in over a decade. His mix accentuates the funkiest bits of the rhythm section, and brings the righteous horns to the fore. Funky breaks masters All Good Funk Alliance are also on hand for an outstanding reimagining … their slick, '80s funk influenced jam show them solidly at the top of their game. Rory Hoy himself also delivers a pair of remixes that are completely different takes on the original. His House Of Phonk mix delightfully harkens back to the late-'90s 'French touch' era of house music. Then, Rory's Acid Trip Remix throws the track into the realm of mid-tempo funky acid house, beaming out of a dark club circa 1988. This amazing release is ripe for summer festivals and sweaty nightclubs alike … dig in.
