Vinny Villbass Moneymaker (Sloth UK Remixes) [Beatservice Records]

Vinny Villbass is one of the long-time driving forces behind the Norwegian club scene. In addition to an extensive list of club nights and house parties on his conscience, he is 1/3 of the crew behind the renowned Oslo club night Sunkissed and initiator of the Norwegian web-portal OsloClubCast, building ties between the clubs, DJs, and producers of Oslo.

As a DJ, Vinny Villbass is known for his exceptional groove and timing as a result of 15 years behind the decks, mostly in Scandinavia, but also as a resident in Berlin as well as New York City. As guitar and synth player in diskJokkeBand, Vinny’s musical experience reaches far beyond his DJ and vinyl junkie exploits. Also a master of acoustics, Vinny’s production skills front his very own trademark sound of house music. He has releases on labels such as Eskimo Recordings, Trunkfunk, and Afro Art, and a long history of remixes. Lately he has been remixing Norwegian bands as diversions from his daily studio focus, as collected on Beatservice’s Diversions remix-compilation.

Vinny’s “Moneymaker” was a standout track on the Prima Norsk 4 compilation, alternately released as its own single in 2017. It’s a slinky house groover with vocals from King Midas singer Ando, tailor-made for late night action. British dance music legend Peter Hurst, AKA Sloth UK, has remixed the track into a dubby, percussive masterwork that has ‘instant classic’ written all over it. Cheekily titled the Queen’s Lead Hat Remix, Sloth UK has provided a full-on vocal mix and a potent instrumental, both ready to do serious dance floor damage. Get down!

Jeff Swiff - Jeff Swiff EP (Vino Recordings)

Vino Recordings celebrates 16 years in operation and its Minneapolis scene with a double A-side release from Jeff Swiff. Jeff’s label with Christian James, Nicewon Recordings, which specializes in prime-time ‘no-coast’ house music sounds, and his seven-year-strong club night House Proud confirm Swiff’s dedication to the genre. His style is focused on the bouncing, ‘phat’ sound of house, evidenced by these two spot-on, driving dance floor stompers with unmistakable Midwest vibes. “Some Type Uh Way” shakes and rolls with delicious, jazzy keys, a crisp, swinging rhythm track, and a dreamy female vocal that pops in and out. “Wun Type Uh Way” presents a deeper and chunkier take, with pulsing, filtered loops and percussive disco vibes suitable for the latest of late nights. Juan Hoerni feat. Terry Dexter - Calling (Cha Cha Project Recordings)

Juan Hoerni, Los Angeles’s rising soulful house maestro, closes out 2018 with “Calling,” a spirited new single in collaboration with house music vocal legend Terry Dexter. Released on Juan’s Cha Cha Project Recordings imprint, “Calling” features Terry’s amazing voice floating over a cruising synth arpeggiation and rhythm track. The production not only recalls highlights of an ‘80s DJ’s underground playlists, but also sounds quintessentially Los Angeles. “Calling” is cool, driving, and sleek as night. An instrumental and dub mix are also included.

The incomparable Roy Davis Jr., who is no stranger to working with Terry Dexter, takes the reins on a passion-filled remix. Roy’s impeccable drum programming creates instant impact, riding over a funky, liquid bass line, swirling string pads, and Terry’s soulful voice. It’s a pure treat for the after hours. Juan and Terry complete the package with the bonus track “Wildness of the Heart,” taking on a classic house music feel with sparkling piano chords, skippy club beats, rousing horn riffs, and disco-flavored string swells. Daniel Allen - Paperweight (Harmonious Discord)

Harmonious Discord welcomes back Daniel Allen (Blue Fin) with two melodic left-field house productions. Ever the boundary bouncer, Daniel sneaks in moments of discordant confusion, masterfully executed behind a ménage of synthesizers. Berlin’s Noah Pred (Thoughtless, False Image) returns to dive deep into a terrific remix.

“Paperweight” is a percussively-driven tech house jam, laced with early ’90s rave synthesizers. Frolicking arpeggiations dance between Keoki-era digital pads. Disorienting abstractions run amok but don’t divert from the dance floor potential of this original. Noah Pred’s interpretation wastes no time getting rough and tumble with powerful drifting percussion. Noah bends the limits of the original Arp synth parts while layering deeper and more complex gradients minute by minute. Pitch-bent chaos erupts with a mayhem-inducing apex. Daniel leaves us with deceivingly flavorful broken-beat dance floor tool “Sex Break”. Hip-moving bass and more signature synth engineering define this safe selection for continued nightclub motion.
