KiloWatts - Renascence (Harmonious Discord Recordings)

Spring hails the return of abstract audio adventurer and Harmonious Discord mainstay KiloWatts. Known for his melodic compositions and logic-defying sound manipulations KiloWatts has left his signature on record labels like Om, Mothership, and Thoughtless. He’s also a huge contributor to the early HD catalog. Earlier this year, KiloWatts unleashed his 11th solo artist album Synthetic Vibrations. In common step, the album was a perfect mixture of live piano and a menagerie of synthetic devices. HD fell in love with the b-side track “Renascence” and are excited to offer it with two excellent remixes by Houston’s Josiah Fontenot.

Renascence” is a rolling, slow burn with airy tines that dance into steady percussion. Funk patterns executed with new guard synths add a natural swing to the build. Attentive patience lures the listener into full musical moments. Uplifting pianos and staggered leads swirl into an audio mesh that drifts to conclusion. Josiah Fontenot takes the tempo faster with a proper 4-on-the-floor techno reinvention. Josiah uses the elements to create powerful spaces in the original mix and delivers a main floor tool with depth. Josiah’s Elektric Mix dives deeper with electro breaks and washed out accents. Heavy bottom end prevails in this sturdy mover. To close the project out, James has offered “Sunshine,” a pensive ambient piece with delayed droplets and mounting symphonics.

Dover - Someday You Will Miss Today (Cold Busted)

Dover is a self-described “instrumental hip hop artist from the Norwegian suburbs.” Hailing from the town of Holmestrand, not far from Oslo, Dover was inspired by the old school masters of hip hop production to craft his own beats. This led to his acclaimed debut album Before The A.M. (on his own Lost Heaven label). With listeners hungry for a follow-up, Cold Busted steps up to release Someday You Will Miss Today. The album consists of twelve cool cuts of melancholy beat construction, serving as a cinematic passageway into Dover’s world.

Highlights on Someday You Will Miss Today are plenty, including the spacious and dreamy opener “Seize the Seconds” and the chunky beats and jazz-piano of “Swing of Things.” There’s also the hypnotic sound-vista of “Memory of Summer,” the filtered synth hijinks of “Afterhours,” and “Years Of Our Lives” with its uplifting melodies and boom-bap beats. There’s a lot to delve into here as Dover makes his mark on the global stage of evocative beat production.

DJ Wash (Butter Music) – “Nice release. The kind of beats I need in these times.”
DJ Halabi (Diggers Delight) – “This is my style. Well crafted samples over booming drums and percussion. Diggin’ it.”

Boogie Belgique - Time For A Boogie (Remastered) [Cold Busted]

Boogie Belgique was formed in 2012 by Oswald Cromheecke, quickly growing into one of the top artists in European trip hop and electro-swing circles. A year later, the Belgian combo released Time For A Boogie, their debut for the Cold Busted label. The album made serious waves, exposing global audiences to Boogie Belgique’s unique fusion of old and new, vintage and modern. The band’s combination of nostalgic swing jazz samples, live instrumentation, and phat beats creates a sound that’s exciting to this day.

That’s why Cold Busted has reissued Time For A Boogie, remastered and, for the first time, on vinyl and cassette. New listeners can thrill to the punchy uptempo breakbeat swing of album opener “Love In Your Eyes,” the worldly trip hop excursion of “Broken Mountain,” “Swing Thing” and its familiar cut-ups mixed with hip hop attitude, and the infectious contemporary groove of the title track. And that’s just a taste of the album’s dozen phenomenal tracks. Time For A Boogie is an album that stands the test of time, reaching into the past to reveal sounds for future dance-floors.

Jon Lee & Nuno (SEA) - Merry Go (Viva Recordings)

Seattle DJ/producer Jon Lee returns to Viva Recordings, this time collaborating with Nuno (SEA) for the exquisite deep house stomper “Merry Go.” Jon has been on the scene since 1994, establishing a name for himself in the northwest with his influential imprint Tilted Records and illustrious DJ appearances. Nuno (SEA) was based in the UK and South Africa before returning to the states, having remixed and released on the likes of Something Different Records, Deeper Shades of House, and Atjazz Record Company. As one can hear, the two make a great production team.

Merry Go” is a pulsating track with a bass-heavy rhythm and hypnotic drive. Filtered textures and repeating tones give way to a sublime introduction of the tune’s title, accompanied by floating pads and dubby percussion hits. The remix comes from Pattern Drama — AKA Touch Of Class Records’ Corey Baker — who incorporates many of the original elements, but adding a deep, throbbing bass line and tripped-out synth sequences. It’s a somewhat acidic treatment compared to the original, giving DJs two effective sides of a similar coin to play with. These will undoubtedly move floors.

ROBOT84 (Paper Recordings) – “The Pattern Drama mix has a great feel to it. A really good house tune.”
Lars Behrenroth (Deeper Shades of House) – “Nice and deep. I’ll def. play it.”
Nick Warren (The Soundgarden) – “Excellent work by Pattern Drama.”
Andrew Emil (Broadway & Wilson) – “I dig the original mix.”
DJ P-Rez (Not So Fast Records) – “Both versions are fire! These will be fun to play.”
Tyler Stadius (Dialtone Records) – “Great track – both versions!”
Brian Epstein (Deepfunk Records) – “Pattern Drama mix for me. Wild and fun.”
Hippie Torrales (Cyberjamz Radio) – “Nice funky beats.”
Richie Hartness (Untitled Music) – “Nice wobble to this one.”
Hober Mallow (Mighty Reel Show, Sydney) – “Great Original, and the Pattern Drama remix just puts that groove down and doesn't let go. Love it. Awesome music.”
