Mister T. - Soul Shower (Cold Busted)

Greece’s funk maestro is back with an incredible new album, Soul Shower. Dimitris Tentinis is Mister T., a mainstay of the Cold Busted label having released seven previous albums through the respected imprint. His varied discography touches on hip hop, soul, dub, and electronic music – but funk is the consistent thread tying together all of Mister T.’s productions. His cuts have become staples in the DJ sets and playlists of underground tastemakers, and there’s also recognition from the mainstream — Mister T.’s music has appeared in brand campaigns from the likes of Capital One, Walmart, Nike, and Hennessy. The funk maestro is on the rise, and Soul Shower is his latest milestone.

Soul Shower opens gently with “Nostalgia for Bent,” featuring a lithe boom-bap beat, tinkling piano, pulsing bass, and a magical female vocal. Things get more layered on “Chain Reaction” as the beats are bolder, the music denser, and the vocal snippets strategically deployed. Other highlights include the heavy horn section funk of the title track; “Groove Analyser” and its retro junkyard vibes; and the aftrobeat/hip-hop mind-meld of “Felabration.” Once the album ends with the dub benediction of “Life In Lockdown,” the listener will have experienced a whole world of inventive grooves. Join Mister T. for a Soul Shower — a shower of dope vibes for the soul.

DJ Sulli - Where Do We Come From? (Hype & Soul)

From the environs of Northern California comes a serious new jam from DJ Sulli and Hype & Soul Recordings. A ‘lifer’ in the house music scene, Sulli (AKA Sean Sullivan) has been actively DJ’ing and releasing tracks for over 25 years. His own Hype & Soul imprint has gone from strength-to-strength, now bursting forth with the exploratory soul-tech cut “Where Do We Come From?” The underground dark room vibe is propelled by a chunky house rhythm, a large, rolling bass line, and synth textures that verge on the ominous. A mysterious, effected vocal wonders aloud on the title’s theme, sprinkling some philosophy the dance floor.

The first remix is Sulli’s Toltech Mix, a more beat-focused treatment that also adds a flurry of psychedelic sound hits and echoey vocal drops. Next, the legendary Ralph Falcon of Miami’s Murk Records is on hand with a pair of phenomenal club-primed treatments. His remix and Radio Dub instantly create the perfect late night atmosphere, with tribal drum play, stereo-panned vocal snips, and massive, rhythmic synth blasts. We may not know where we come from, but this pack is surely sending us straight to the dance floor.

Hype & Soul will be launching an early release NFT package that is a limited edition digital asset available for sale six weeks prior to initial digital release with the intention of providing early buyers an opportunity to play and record performances with the mixes much sooner than the general public. This package will include a number of creative pieces including a complete Ableton project file from the original DJ Sulli mix, a certificate of authenticity and copyright performance release, plus all mixes in both WAV and MP3 formats along with original artwork. Limited to 50 copies only from OPENSEA.IO.

Boronas (Escapism Musique) – “Good package here. The Original and Ralph’s mixes work for me.”
DJ Harri (Sub Club) – “That Murk bass sound! Love it, will play and support.”
Strat3gy (House Afrika Records) – “Mad! Dark! Love it.”
Lee Jones (Buslife) – “This is bonkers and really has me captivated. I think I’ll be supporting the Toltech mix.”
Jake Beautyman (FUMP) – “Really solid release. I can see these getting some plays at upcoming gigs.”
DJ Freddy (Courtoisie Records) – “In my playlist on Maxximum Radio (FR).”
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) – “Love the dark vi be. The Original mix is my fave with that dirty bassline.”

Luis Machuca - Where Are You (Friskybeat Records)

Luis Machuca, arguably Canada’s hardest-working underground house DJ, returns to Friskybeat on a follow-up collaboration with vocalist Michelle Ross. “Where Are You” arrives in two versions, each offering up a deep slice of soulful, intimate dance floor sounds. The Disco Soul Mix begins with sweet electric piano before crisp four-on-the-floor beats, a prominent and bouncy synth bass, and Michelle’s beguiling vocal performance take over. The tune builds with strings, arpeggiations, and busy percussion — all elements combining for an emotional ride. The Dub Mix takes things even deeper, with warm, rhythmic pads, dramatic piano chords, and echo effects on the vox. The result is a sleek cut perfect for the latest of late night DJ sets.

Curtiss Logan (Jersey Soul) – “Hot release, love this one. Full support.”
Vincent Kwok (Transport Recordings) – “Really feeling the Dub Mix.”
Wilbour Craddock (Groovewest) – “Late night dance floor magic!”
Distant People (Seamless) – “Smooth vocals and a nice rolling groove.”
Tony Fuel (ReFuel Your Soul) – “The dub mix is hypnotic!”
Michael Fossati (Spirit Of House) – “Very enchanting.”
Indy Lopez (Deep & Soul) – “Nice track, perfect for the show.”
DJ Osric (Black and Blue Show) – “I can feel myself getting lost in this beautiful release.”

KiloWatts & PointBender - Western Wolf (Harmonious Discord)

KiloWatts is best known for his immersive albums that fuse organic instrumentation and synthetic manipulation. PointBender has released a litany of remixes, albums, and singles across many of the industry’s silent giants. Both being no strangers on the HD imprint, it felt prudent to release their first collaborative vinyl release to celebrate Harmonious Discord’s 20th anniversary.

The genesis of the Western Wolf EP was formed in dark warehouses and dirt dancefloors in the late 1990s in Dallas, TX — a truly special time and location in electronic music. However, it wouldn’t be until tens of years later, after multiple individual albums, EPs, and back-and-forth remixes that KiloWatts and PointBender would write music together using the power of the internet.

The Western Wolf EP is a collection of songs marrying electronic synthesis, found sound recording, live instrumentation, and written melodies. The EP starts us off with “Circling the Crown”; a slow-building tease that navigates through all points deep. Fluid rattles and dulcet tones define the pace as layers drift in and out, ultimately rising to the introduction of perfectly tempered dub bass. “Western Wolf” turns up the tempo and energy with sharp percussive accents and subdued pads. The introduction of distorted bass slaps and arpeggiated synths start to steer the piece into stronger dancefloor territory when a breakout of melodic chords shifts the mood to lighter ground, showcasing a selection that sails through multiple moods. The Dub version of “Western Wolf” strips out the more overt melodic elements in favor of a slowly building track perfect for threading through abstract house and techno sets. The project ends with “Swangert,” the not so typical B-side. In this track, the duo explores parts unknown outside the confines of traditional dance music with a highly swung and constructively complex slow burn. Phased leads and short percussive bass accents flower this song, keeping the momentum solid until the end.

Look for more from this dynamic duo in months and years to come, including a follow-up remix EP featuring some very exciting artists.

Richard Hardcastle (All Out War) – “Heavy EP! Western Wolf Dub hits hard. Swangert is a real groover. Yeah!”
Jamie Kidd (BYC Music) – “Nicely produced. Western Wolf is lovely.”
Nick Warren (Hope Recordings) – “Circling The Crown is very cool.”
Black Mighty Wax (Irma Records) – “A nice evolution of electronic dance.”
Sandro Bianchi (Ibiza Sonica) – “Excellent release. Love it!”
DJ Firefly (Couch Dancing) – “Fantastic vibes from these 2 amazing producers.”
5volts (Social Isolation) – “Gorgeous sounds! KiloWatts has that special ability to create a sense of wonder through his music. This is no exception.”
