Bordland - Home EP (Dimentique)

The Bristol-based artist Bordland epitomizes his Dimentique label as a producer filled with surprises and a ear to the eclectic. Unafraid at playing with genres, both Bordland and Dimentique have revealed a distinctive catalog held together within the rein of thoughtful deep house. The new Home EP offers three expressive tracks from Bordland, each presenting a lush, dreamily produced sound. "Home" is filled with spacey atmospheric synths and pulsing pads over the direct rhythms, creating a lovely, emotional vibe. "Switch It" also features Bordland's filtered, warm chords, this time accompanied by a more traditional house rhythm track and a hint of a 'lounge' style. "Finale", which was previewed early last year but is only now fully realized, applies the aesthetics of the EP to a gentle, slo-mo 'dubstep' feel. There's a skillful use of tension, as the sound rises to subtle blasts of synths and rhythm punches. Bordland's Home EP succeeds in transmitting an exquisite message to the dance floor.

Balls Deep - Vegas / Ultramarine (Protect and Serve)

Following a recent remix released on Seamless Records, and the first release on his own digital label, Bristol-based house music producer Balls Deep delivers two very different tracks for the second outing on Protect and Serve.

Like the infamous city itself, "Vegas" offers revelers thrills and spills till the early hours of the morning. Its rich and lush nu-disco style drums are met with a deliciously cheeky bass line and lead melody, topped off with hooky vocal stabs and synth effects. It's a departure from Balls Deep's usual sound, but as the saying goes: what happens in "Vegas" is too good to stay there and not be shared with the world -- or something like that.

On the split side, "Ultramarine" dives back into familiar waters. Tough, house-driven drums give way to an infectious, old-school lead comprised of energetic stabs, ably accompanied by a warm sub bass and progressive mix of vocal hits and synth maneuvers. The inevitable breakdown and buildup submerges the track in sonar noises before surfacing again, accounting for just the right pressure levels to drive a big room audience crazy.

Vanilla Ace (OFF Recordings / Bunny Tiger) - "'Vegas' has a nice drive to it and 'Ultramarine' is funky."
Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe) - "Fun!"
Alkalino (Estimativa / Audaz Recordings) - "Simple but joyful melodies … I like both tracks."
Tad Wily (Retrofit / Mullet Records) - "Good stuff!"
Distant People (Foliage / Seamless) - "Ultra crisp sound and a tight mix … I like this moody funk."
DJ Style (Knob Records) - "Cool!"
Eric Davenport (Guesthouse) - "I dig the use of classic tech sounds and melodies. Updated perfectly for 2015."
Tom Conrad (Adaptation Music) - "I like the style of both tracks, especially the quirky main room vibe of 'Vegas'."
Clive Craske (RadioReverb, Brighton) - "The deep bass and tinkling melodic line alone make 'Vegas' a standout track. Add the second melody and other subtle layers and you have a future dance floor classic."
Mr. Spring (2 FM, Dublin) - "Sinister, but deep."
Sam Hopkins (AccuRadio, Chicago) - "Both of these are stellar peak time tracks."
David Cronin (RTE 2FM, Ireland) - "I love the old school stabs here … I will play this."
Niksa Dragolin (Eurostar Radio, Croatia) - "This is superb … I love it."

Bordland - Phantom / Know It All (Dimentique)

Bristol, UK, based label Dimentique is pleased to present the latest single from in-house DJ and artist Bordland, the double A-side of "Phantom" and "Know It All". With five releases under the label's belt from producers such as Koala, UFOS, and Wicked Habits, Dimentique certainly presents a Bristol-born sound, casually mixing up deep house, bass, garage, and nu-disco -- sometimes within the same song. Bordland focuses more on the deep house side of the spectrum, and this single's two tracks come from months of inspiration and preparation. "Phantom" seduces with its warm chord structure, emotive vocal phrases, and somewhat retro UK house appeal. "Know It All" follows, adding a touch of swing to Bordland's sound while still inhabiting the deep zone. Melodic pads and echoed synths abound while the soulful samples add a slight garage flavor. These cuts are tuned to the dead of night, primed and ready for intimate dance floors surrounded by bass-heavy speakers.

[sic] - Protect and Serve (mu-sic)

Dan Jeffries, aka [sic], is a prolific Bristol, UK based DJ and producer. [sic] has had previous releases on Slime, Re:Sound and Aux Technology, and recently set up the mu-sic imprint dedicated to showcasing his productions and the remix talents of producers from around the world. The third release on mu-sic finds [sic] reaching deeper dance floor territory with the subtle-yet-menacing tech-house track “Protect And Serve.”

“Protect And Serve” features a deliciously hooky bass line fighting it out with delayed percussion hits, vocal stabs, and the ever creeping menace of police sirens, leading up to an almighty breakdown filled with the sounds of rioting, smashed glass, and the call for the police! [sic] masterfully keeps things in control as “Protect And Serve” never gets aggressive or unsettling, instead mining these elements for ideal late night-dance floor action.

On remix duty is Swedish born producer Materia. Materia has really been going places of late, collaborating with Hakan Lidbo for PR Records and seeing his track “Response” make it on to Carl Cox’s 10 Years of Space Ibiza album. Materia’s rework of “Protect And Serve” takes things somewhat deeper than the original, with tight, bassy rhythms, blissed-out dub-delays, crisp ride effects, and subtle nods to the social chaos of the original.

Nick Warren - “Two great mixes. Excellent stuff from a fellow Bristolian.”
Chris Fortier - “Solid.”
Orde Meikle (Slam / Soma) - “Liking these tracks … will spin.”
Mark Pledger - “Superb! Loving this track.”
Noah Pred - “Enjoying the remix.”
Joey Silvero (Distant People) - “Mysterious kind of feel to this … good for late night action. Hypnotic.”
Sonic Union - “Really dig Materia’s stripped back bouncy remix. The original feels solid as well.”
Louk (Compulzion / Druck) - “Warm and deep … nice.”
Chris Udoh (Tigerhook) - “It’s a banger!”
DK Watts (Short Bus Kids) - “Crazy good! The original has the energy that moves a dance floor. The remix drugs it up a bit but still has that needed edge.”
Malbetrieb (Klopfgeist / Paradigm) - “Nice!”
Andrew Duke (Cognition Audioworks) - “Both are superb, but diggin’ the slinky vibes of the Materia mix most.”
D-Sens - “Both mixes are really cool but my pick is the original.”
Joshua Jacobs (Music You Need blog) - “Dirty, groovy tunes from [sic] with a deep bass line and dark synths. Great listen.”
