Hannah Holland - Live It EP (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings is back with another New York-meets-London collaboration from Hannah Holland (label owner of Batty Bass, Native City). Hannah Holland is a product of all the best bits of London club culture. She condenses the most innovative and exciting parties, scenes, movements, subcultures, and music into one frenetic curly haired whirlwind of a DJ. The Live It EP is a double A-side release that features vocals from club legends and remixers who are on the forefront of the underground club scene, from both sides of the pond.

First up is “Live It”. The original is inspired by the New York Ballroom House genre, taking cues from NYC club kids like its featured vocalist, Xander. With a dark, cutting bass line, equally cutting percussion, and vocals that reference the city nightlife, the track easily lends itself to the underground dance floor. Label owners Christy Love and W. Jeremy re-work the title track under their moniker House of Stank. Their remix is the housiest interpretation on the package with its bright, uplifting keys, swinging percussion, and thumping bass. Fellow New Yorkers, The Carry Nation also take a cue from the NY Ballroom genre for their remix, infusing it with their signature style of tribal beats, stabbing bass hits, and vocal FX samples.

The second original track on the release, “Play With the Maid,” is a dark and edgy house track filled with bitch-house style vocals provided by British DJ and producer Josh Caffe who makes reference to The Shed, an infamous after-hours spot tucked away deep in East London. Rounding out the EP is a remix of “Play With the Maid” from London’s The Cucarachas (Tom Stephan and Borja Peña). They give the track a super old school house vibe complete with chord stabs, driving four-on-the-floor beats, and a grooving bass line that kills. This release is a prerequisite for all after-hours heads.

The Cucarachas - Spread (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings continue to establish themselves as forerunners of the underground house sound with “Spread,” a dark and dirty house track from London’s The Cucarachas. The Cucarachas are DJ/producer team Tom Stephan and Borja Peña, a collaboration that was born in 2012 after the success of their underground party, DISH, in East London. They have been producing tracks, remixes, and edits that encapsulate the sound of the night: dirty bass lines, Chicago house elements, and dark grooves. The original version of “Spread” showcases this unmistakable trademark, sprinkled with rousing diva vocal stabs and punctuated synths … they really bring it to the dance floor for a peak hour time slot.

The package includes two remixes, the first coming from fellow Londoners Up Yours, which consists of Severino from the Horse Meat Disco collective and HiFi Sean, both well-known DJ’s and producers who have had releases on Get Up Recordings, Southern Fried Recordings and Batty Bass. Their dirty house treatment of “Spread” highlights their unique ability to take a track and really make it their own. The bass and percussion hits hard and funky, which is sure-fire way to get the dance floor fired up.

The second remix comes from Get Up Recordings co-owner, DJ and producer W. Jeremy. He has produced under the moniker House of Stank with label partner, Christy Love, and has produced solo remixes for JD Samson’s band MEN and veteran house producer Angel Moreas. His take on “Spread” translates into a beautiful build-up floor slammer with a bit of acid thrown in. The remix is reminiscent of the old school Wild Pitch style making it a remix that will be played for a long time to come.

German MT (Como Las Grecas Music Blog) - ”Killer release … fire on dance floor!“
Stefan Popovic (DiscoTone Radio Show) - ”Spinnable to the bone!“

Kosta (Vibe FM, Romania) - ”Bouncy and fresh. Love this. The original is right up my alley, but both the remixes are really good.“

The Carry Nation + The Cucarachas - Warriors (Get Up Recordings)

New York’s Get Up Recordings presents a true transatlantic effort in the form of the single “Warriors” from The Carry Nation and The Cucarachas. The idea for “Warriors” began as The Carry Nation (Will Automagic and DJ Nita) were touring Europe in support of the “This Bitch Is Alive” single and decided to stop in London for a visit with their friends Borja Pena and Tom Stephan, who make up The Cucarachas. A feverish ten hour studio session ensued with the foundation for “Warriors” as a result. Once the The Carry Nation returned across the ocean, each duo completed their own version, with a US Mix and a UK Mix as evidence.

“Warriors” is a percussive house music stomper with a good dose of retro flavor and a topping of after-hours energy. The samples in the track might not come as a surprise due to the title, but they are used rhythmically and creatively in a way that feels quite fresh. The breakdowns are expressive and unpredictable and should generate megawatts of dance floor electricity. The crew enlisted the legendary Tedd Patterson for the first in a set of remixes and the man from Vibal Recordings definitely delivers. Patterson unleashes a Dance Mix, a Dub Mix, and the ‘vital for DJs’ Battle Beats version. These mixes give a further nod to an old school sound while pulsing and grooving in a modern fashion. Crucial beats, indeed. Patterson is actually the only act on this single that is not a ‘duo’ as Fatherhood (Michael Magnan and Physical Therapy) and DONKEY (Josh Sparber and Mikey Fuentes) close out the remixes. Fatherhood’s mix takes things a bit deeper with atmospheric percussion and spacey synth pads creating an otherworldly vibe. DONKEY drags “Warriors” into the warehouse with a booming and dark interpretation that sounds both exhilarating and a little dangerous.

The quality on display from “Warriors” has inspired The Carry Nation and The Cucarachas to make their collaboration a regular occurrence, added to the agenda whenever one or the other crosses the big pond. Until then, enjoy this exceptional offering from Get Up Recordings with the promise of much more to come.
