Soulspace - Soulspace (Wind Horse Records)

It’s been said before, but Wind Horse Records’ evolution on the world stage never fails to captivate. The label has helped develop India’s many talented resources for export to the outside world while pioneering the deep house movement in its own country with releases, parties, and ground-breaking collaborations. Consider the stunning debut launch of Soulspace’s self-titled new album … without sounding out of place for the imprint, the release is certainly a departure from the world-influenced deep house and tech sensibilities it has defined itself by. The Soulspace work distances itself with more exploratory tempos and an experimental beat-maker approach, of which cities like Los Angeles or London are particularly well known for.

Yet Vishnu PS, the electronica producer behind Soulspace, is worlds apart – actually hailing from New Delhi, India, the same as his new label home. Exuded by the name itself, something deeply emotional is to be expected of Vishnu’s work. The interpretation of it could go one of two ways: either dark and devoid or heavily introspective, but in reality there is an uninhibited, playful thread throughout, even in its most touching moments. Capable of shifting aural ambiance between downtempo summertime grooves, jittery club music, and back to ethereal expeditions in a blink of an eye, Soulspace produces tracks that are steadfast in their melodic ambitions. The slickly engineered compositions are not only deeply appealing but offer moments of musical clarity.

Opening with an eye-rubbing ambient piece in “Morning At Roots”, the album gets off to an intriguing start. Using singing birds and the gurgling of a soft stream underneath a dreamy melody, it’s a peaceful exercise in meditative sound. “Jayeta” follows suit with relaxing elements, only this time a strong kick and big bass punch through with an undeniable groove, creating the type of bright but moody dichotomy DJs dream of in a warm up cut. Picking up the pace once again, “C’est La Vie” is the most straight forward arrangement on the release. It uses very familiar vocals, but in a totally unfamiliar way, focusing on only the embellished moments alongside xylophone hits and crescendoing flurries of metallic video game-like synths, but only the ‘advanced levels’ kind … at it’s peak it becomes quite a dizzying affair. Opening with the sounds of kids at play in the streets, the exact type of short, but sweet chopped-and-pitched vocals that would be found in UK bass music develop on “You”. The track also features stylistically consistent shuffling patterns, but the scattered bells, triangles, faded keys, and scratchy upper atmosphere are uniquely its own and particularly sublime. “To The Top” incorporates a treasure chest of found sounds snapping into place like clockwork, each as if it was pulled from some sort of fantastical workshop. A child rambles at intermittent points and the footwork rhythms give it the edge it needs from falling into a hypnotizing lullaby. This is in contrast to “The Stars So Bright” which is a glitchy number that evokes laying in bed looking up with ears ringing and no sleep insight, but in a beautifully satisfying way. Soulspace’s own VIP Edit of “Morning At Roots” delivers more attitude than its previous incarnation, breaking the spell of an early intro with a stuttering kick and more declared refrains later on. Finally, putting the album to rest, “Night, Night” is a bedtime elixir with melodic chimes and crickets reverberating through the dark of the late hours. The lone collaborator with Soulspace on this album, Frame/Frame, provides the perfect, slightly muffled voice of someone fighting those last minutes of consciousness.

Overall, this eponymous debut album from Soulspace can certainly be taken in whole as a listening experience, but more discerning DJs will be able to hone in on specific cuts and find purpose in them as serious distinguishers in their personal sets.

Roy Davis Jr. feat. J.R. Jordan - Take You There (Rouse Records)

San Francisco bay area house music label Rouse Records kicks off with a bang, revealing a single that's fully loaded with legendary talent. The incomparable Roy Davis Jr. is joined by accomplished vocalist J.R. Jordan for the deep, rhythmic, and acid-flavored "Take You There". J.R.'s vocal delivery smoothly recalls classic late night excursions as the keys and pads build, leading to a liquid acid line. The production is pure Roy Davis Jr., giving the dance floor a blissful moment to savor. "Take You There" is also a Chicago affair … a couple of the city's other house music legends join the single with remix treatments. Gene Farris (Farris Wheel, Cajual) delivers a rolling, high calibre version that will give the nightclub speakers a workout. Next, DJ Spank Spank, one-third of Phuture -- known as the founders of acid house -- is joined by the combo's newest member, Lethario Lee, for what is fittingly dubbed the Acid Soul Mix. It's an impressive beginning for Rouse Records, and yet another feather in the cap for the man that is Roy Davis Jr.

Craig Whitfield (The HHA / Restless Soul) - "Yeah, Mr. Roy Davis Jr. is a don of the acid sound. Only minutes into the original mix you kind of understand why. It's a slick house track with a soulful melody that evolves into a crazy acid track. Brilliant, exciting, and fresh."

Various Artists - Our Disco Vol. 1 (Discobox Records)

One year after Discobox Records' debut release, the label is proud to present its first compilation: Our Disco Vol. 1. As the name suggests, Our Disco will be a series presenting fresh music from the label’s already established roster in addition to new faces joining the cast.

Opening the pack is De Pin Up Club, an artist known for work that stands as a testament to his musical inspirations, quoting its history, but always adding in new ideas. The feel good disco of "New York Groove" draws from the Paradise Garage … and ever-so-tastefully. Rhythmic guitar and chic vocals combine with old school synths for a spin underneath the disco ball.

Dansoul, the production alter ego of DJ Daniel D, explores nu-disco influenced by '90s house rhythms on "Get Down". He uses Moog synths and a resonating bass line with hip-house vocals for plenty of bounce per ounce.

Next, two very well known names in the Brazilian music scene join the label. Alvinho L. Noise and Nytron drench piano chords in filters on "Say What", a superb work that lays down an infectious bass groove and a punchy beat accentuated by cowbell hits.

Zister is another well known talent from Brazil. With its bass line on overdrive, funky, wailing electric key riff, and hard hitting percussive groove, "Rise For Love" is a dance floor force to be reckoned with.

Rounding the package out is DJ Juliano Maia’s Funk4Mass project. A track characterized by broken beat electro-funk with booty bass, "Shake" is full of fat sounds. The accompanying vocals are primitive and straight to the point.

From disco to house, blending nu-disco, tech-house, and classic old school electro sounds, this is what Discobox is all about. Get into the groove!

Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe) - “Wonderful … right on time.”
Tensnake - “I like ‘New York Groove.’”
Chris Todd (Crazy P / Hot Toddy) - “Really feeling the much more off-the-wall ‘Shake’ … good stuff.”
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - “My pick is ‘New York Groove,’ but ‘Shake’ is great too.”
Danny Ward (Moodymanc / Dubble D) - “Nice grooves here … Zister’s Rise For Love' doing it for me on first listen, thanks.”
Dave Mayer (Strictly Rhythm / Hardsoul) - “‘New York Groove’ is perfect for my beach residency!”
Distant People (SSRadio / Foliage) - “Spaced-out hypnotic vibe on Alvinho L. Noise & Nytron’s ’Say What,’ a wicked, dark back room track … I can imagine the room all moving in time to this one.”
Flash Atkins (Paper Recordings / Into The Valley) - “’New York Groove’ for me baby.”
Lorenzo al Dino (7th District) - “Perfect package of tracks! I specifically like Dansoul’s ‘Get Down.’”
Michael Fossati (Spirit Of House Web Zine) - “The uplifting, old school infused ‘New York Groove’ is a sure-fire floor weapon.”
Booker T. (Kings Of Soul / Liquid Sessions) - “Nice soulful disco vibes on ‘New York Groove.’”
DJ Nova (Rodon FM 95, Greece) - “‘Rise For Love’ by Zister, the most energetic of the release, is a killer and the Italo synth magic of Dansoul’s ‘Get Down’ moves me too.”
DJ Jazzy L (Jazzy Lounge Radio) - "'New York Groove' is an ear-grabber, head-nodder, and butt-mover. Sweet!"
Marcia Carr (Mi-Soul Radio / Ladyz) - “Old school vibes on the real house tip on 'Say What' -- which is fab -- and 'Shake' is a delightful electro funk gem.”
Myxzlplix (Subdivisions Global Radio Show, San Diego) - “This is nu-disco done right … so much goodness to play out here.”

Hamza & Audio Units - Chez Guru (Wind Horse Records)

New Delhi’s Wind Horse Records has established itself as an Indian house music staple. As such, collaborations and wonderful guest remixers sometimes just seem to fall into place. These circumstances lead to Hamza and Audio Units linking up during an extended stay while Hamza was on tour, resulting in a week-long studio session that birthed two unexpected but totally organic deep house originals in "Chez Guru" and "La Lune". Likewise, Indian remixer Satya Hinduja crossed paths with Hamza spontaneously in NYC. Meanwhile, Spirit Catcher's introduction to the label as remixers is more deliberately part of an effort by Wind Horse to incorporate more remixers from the west in a two-way global relationship.

Audio Units consists of Bangalore-based brothers Ashwin Baburao (AKA Inferno) and Ashrith Baburao. They've been developing their sound impressively and at a fast pace with previous releases and remixes on the likes of 3am Recordings, Bermudos, and Dutchie Music as well as Wind Horse. The pair have been active for ten years DJ’ing at festivals and venues throughout India, making them some of the top ambassadors for the deep house sound. Wind Horse records owner Hamza's productions have been inspired by his own travels and life on three different continents. These sounds have led to a prolific five years for the Indian producer, with over a hundred recorded tracks, and singles for the likes of legendary German label Kompakt and New York-based deep house imprints King Street, Nite Grooves, and Open Bar Music.

With their backgrounds in mind, the meeting between Audio Units and Hamza is that of two Indian house heavy weights, if not royalty, and the results reflect this. "Chez Guru" gets its title from Ashrith's nickname 'Guru' and the french word for 'in the home of,' basically a stamp for the place of the studio meeting. The vocals are also in French, which somehow always seems to lend an understated cool to any track, but when accompanied by slick productions such as these collaborators' it becomes undeniably clear. The bass sounds are the foundation for "Chez Guru", with two different levels responding to, and sometimes talking over, each other. The pads and key stabs are swirling, funky, and deep as ever except for wild, climatic moments perfectly paced throughout. Hand percussion finishes things off with a NY house style groove.

What "La Lune" doesn't have in backstory, it makes up for in bounce. It is the edgier cousin to "Chez Guru", once again dominated by a wonderfully rich bass sound. The drums are crisp and the highest percussive elements are sharp. A deep, echo-drenched synth line haunts most of the song. Leads and other rhythmic effects are introduced to accent the bass line. Tension is heaviest at the track's two breaking points, both of which the full groove absolutely explodes out of, clearing the way for dancing frenzies.

The Belgian duo of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet, better known as Spirit Catcher, have an impressive production career spanning labels like 20/20 Vision, NRK, and Freerange. Fans of Wind Horse are likely to be familiar with the two, and they look to further connect with their Indian followers on their remix of "Chez Guru". A lot of elements from the original remain, but they are more drawn out in a way that really highlights the funky nature of the song. This is the true magic of remixes, when they exaggerate themes which leave the listener's perception of the original forever changed. Highlighting another exciting aspect of remixes, Satya Hinduja delivers the release's icebreaker when she enters "La Lune" into a totally dreamy state -- a much moodier and completely different direction from the original. Satya is a renaissance woman, combining her passion for music into the roles of composer, film scorer, educator, DJ / promoter, and now deep house and techno producer. She currently splits her time between her home town of Mumbai and New York. While her artistic footprint has evolved from eastern traditional to underground deep house and techno, her spiritual vision is molded by a flawless blend of the two. Her remix is an ethereal evolution of melodies that is sure to send any listener over the moon. It is cinematic and beautiful for any moment, but will likely prove extremely touching in late night DJ sets.

Marques Wyatt - “Tight!”
Miguel Migs - “Some nice sounds.”
Giom - “‘Chez Guru’ is a cool track.”
Inland Knights - “Nice.”
Groove Assassin - “Spirit Catcher mix is heavy!”
Craig Stewart (Montana & Stewart / DCSTrax) - “Original ‘Chez Guru’ mix is one of the best tracks I've heard all year. It really is that good … great work.”
Distant People (SSRadio / Foliage) - “Slamming, bright, and spacey feel … future audio!”
Alvaro Hylander (DeepWit Recordings) - “Every shade of house and flavor in one package. It doesn't get better than that … fantastic!”
CJ Mackintosh - "'Chez Guru' is working!"
Slok (My Favorite Robot / One Records) - “The Spirit Catcher remix of ‘Chez Guru’ is my favorite, but the original is also great!”
Tom Lown (Savoir Faire / Lost My Dog) - “Some nice tunage here … especially liking the deep spacey vibes on Satya Hinduja remix.”
Carlo Gambino (Midnight Social Recordings / Hot Waves) - “Nice release from Hamza and Audio Units … one of their best to date.”
Grigory Melikhov (Esthetics Records / Minimo Records) - “Amazing, intelligent sound.”
Steve Mill (Madhouse Records / Large Music) - “Who doesn't love a little bit of Spirit Catcher? A great remix of a really excellent original.”
Holosound (CITRIC Recordings) - “‘Chez Guru’ original is probably my favorite although the ‘La Lune’ Satya Hinduja remix is some progressive deepness.”
Al Bradley (3am Recordings / Fabric) - “Another really awesome release on Wind Horse. The two originals are the picks for me -- both oozing quality -- with the cheeky swagger of ‘La Lune’ getting the thumbs-up overall.”
Sam Hopkins (AccuRadio, Chicago) - "Killer tunes -- deep, but meaty -- and great remixes. Also, it's dope to hear some great house from India!"
Myxzlplix (Subdivisions Global Radio Show) - "Man, these guys are doing it right. Great release."
