Various Artists - Glad i Dag EP (Cymasonic)

Cymasonic celebrate the 'happy days' of summer with Glad i Dag, an exciting various artists collection showcasing the label's hard-working stalwarts. With roots in both Barcelona and Oslo, Cymasonic and its vinyl-only offshoot Cymawax transmit a truly trans-European attitude alongside a globally representative deep techno sound. This ethos is in full view with the opening track "Don't Give Up" by Trulz & Robin side-project Robomatic. It's a pulsating, beatless electronic track that lies somewhere between prime Detroit moments and evocative Blade Runner shimmers. Rising Norway-via-Bulgaria producer Ivaylo brings the beats and bleeps into play with "Hazel", a groovy house track with heaps of bass perfectly suited for late night vibrations. Newcomer Fede Zerdan, who recently made his second appearance with a well-received 12" on Cymawax, is next to land in the zone with "RPS-SET" … dubby textures and oozing synthesizers build steadily over some tough rhythms. Finally, Trulz & Robin contribute the eleven minute "Glad i Dag (Frosk Edit)", a hypnotic, churning techno composition with evolving layers of melody and a joyful, rhythmic bounce. It's a mind-blowing set from Cymasonic, confirming the healthy state of the label on the occasion of its ninth release.

Rory Hoy feat. Ashley Slater - Hey Everybody! (Super Hi-Fi Recordings)

After five acclaimed albums for Howlin' Records and singles for the likes of Breakbeat Paradise and Skint's Under 5's imprint, Rory Hoy has teamed up with Ashley Slater (Freak Power) to unleash "Hey Everybody!" through Super Hi-Fi Recordings. Already proving to be one of the hottest funk / soul bangers of the summer, "Hey Everybody!" has received early accolades from Craig Charles of the BBC's Funk & Soul Show, Fake Blood ("super slick"), and big beat legend Freddy Fresh ("dope tune!"). The cut is a rollicking, organic funk-disco number that seamlessly meshes Nile Rodgers / Chic-style guitar riffs with sexy vocals recalling Sly Stone. It's a combination made in heaven … and for dance floors here on Earth.

The pack of hot shot remixes include a stomping version by Skint Records legend Dr. Bone, his first remix production in over a decade. His mix accentuates the funkiest bits of the rhythm section, and brings the righteous horns to the fore. Funky breaks masters All Good Funk Alliance are also on hand for an outstanding reimagining … their slick, '80s funk influenced jam show them solidly at the top of their game. Rory Hoy himself also delivers a pair of remixes that are completely different takes on the original. His House Of Phonk mix delightfully harkens back to the late-'90s 'French touch' era of house music. Then, Rory's Acid Trip Remix throws the track into the realm of mid-tempo funky acid house, beaming out of a dark club circa 1988. This amazing release is ripe for summer festivals and sweaty nightclubs alike … dig in.

W. Jeremy - Summer EP (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings co-owner W. Jeremy releases his third original EP for the label, titled the Summer EP. The EP consists of three original tracks highlighting a variety of genres representative of his production style. Chicago DJ / producer John Mörk lends his magical acid touch on a remix of “I Like That”.

W. Jeremy is a NYC-based DJ / Producer whose history of working for DJs and record labels in the '90s -- ranging from Angel Moraes to Tony Humphries -- has greatly influenced his sets and production style. His Get Up Recordings label is also clearly influenced by his musical past, with a colorful spectrum of artists and remixers including Kim Ann Foxman, Tedd Patterson, MATRiXXMAN, Alinka, Gavin Russom, and David Harness.

The EP kicks off with the completely grooving fun track “I Like That”. Like W. Jeremy's other productions, the main backbone of this cut starts with a booming kick and percussion. The bass then drops in, followed by the melody, which are key stabs reminiscent of the '80s dance era.

Chicago native and NBD Music label head honcho John Mörk bumps up his remix by sprinkling acid all over it. His take is a bit like his work from his past outfit The Sound Republic, but with more of his own signature solo sound, developed through remixing the likes of Midnight Magic, Speck Mountain, and Change Request, to name a few. You can hear the amazing command he has over the 303 as both a melody and a bass line. John is truly a master producer and it can be heard thoroughly on this track.

The next two original tracks -- “Spring” and “Summer” -- showcase W. Jeremy’s wide palette. “Spring” jumps out of the gate as an uplifting soundscape, complete with a deep sub bass, keys, and wind chimes. He also gives the acid treatment here along with vocal bursts that remind one of springtime. “Summer” is definitely a full-on funk jam. Rolling subs as snares, organ rides, and ocean wave vocals bring you right into the feeling of sitting back, relaxing and enjoying … because it's summer!

Eddie Amador - "Solid work!"
Gene Farris - "Great stuff!"
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "Both 'Spring' and 'Summer' are fab."
DJ Mes (Guesthouse) - "John Mörk does it for me!"
Hippie Torrales - "Nice grooves here."

Nick Jagger - "Nice jackin' old school acid shiz."

Eric Sharp (Rock It Science Labs) - "'I Like That' … aptly named!"
Chuck Daniels (Sampled Recordings) - "The John Mörk remix for me!"
Lupe Fuentes (Inhouse Records) - "Nice vibe!"
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "Both versions of 'I Like That' are slammers, John's remix being particularly tasty! Of the two remaining tracks, tough to choose but the pounding vibes on 'Summer' really got me wiggling around … ace."
Distant People (Foliage / Seamless) - "Into the deep thump that is 'Summer' … the drums are crushing."
DJ Zach (Subtronic End) - "NIce groove right off the bat on 'I Like That'. Real classic sounding. John Mörk's remix sounds like old Josh Wink."
Tariq Ziyad (Nu Urban ERA) - "I'm feeling the groove and true old school sound of these great tracks."

DJ Enne - Glockenspiel (Karmaloft Music)

Prolific German house music label Karmaloft Music proudly presents the latest EP from DJ Enne, the prolific DJ, piano player, drummer, and member of Italo-influenced combo Mohear. With an ever-expanding discography including releases and remix work for the likes of Compost, Nang, and Permanent Vacation, DJ Enne has been spreading his fancy fusion of spacey house, subversive disco, and cosmic funk far and wide. This latest EP, titled Glockenspiel, features three cool new original cuts as well as remixes from Tom Appl and DJ Aroma.

The release opens with the pulsing "Glockenspiel", a cut that starts out with understated yet teasing synths before a potent rhythmic loop kicks in. It masterfully builds from there; a rolling bass line plays along with melodic riffs from the eponymous glockenspiel as a mysterious vocoder voice supplies the hook. "Stand Up" follows, showcasing a strong, uplifting house music composition, complete with a catchy, Balearic-style vocal performance and fantastic piano chords. Summer perfection. "Bora Galattica" digs into DJ Enne's Italo-influences, as an ominous synth bass drone leads the track through layers of dusky pads and slinky beats until an arpeggiated keyboard lead takes flight.

Tom Appl is no stranger to followers of Karmaloft Music, and here the Munich-based producer remixes "Glockenspiel" into a dense, progressive-tinged groover. Tom brings the glockenspiel instrument to the forefront, using his driving rhythm section to compliment its melody in a club-ready fashion. On the final track, Berlin's DJ Aroma deftly remixes "In The Beginning", taken from DJ Enne's recent Shades of House album. She adds some very Berlin-esque textures, including dramatic synth washes, a stun-gun bass line, and a vocal tag that's processed and echoed throughout. All in all, Glockenspiel shows DJ and dance floors some of the many flavors in DJ Enne's repertoire … an impressive release.
