Sex Judas - Monter Sur Le Cochon Norvégien N'est Pas Facile - The Norwegian Remixes (Cymasonic)

Barcelona-based Cymasonic is a musical imprint, platform and collaboration between longtime friends Trulz & Robin (Trulz Kvam, Robin Crafoord) and Arildo (Arild Lopez) with stellar releases by Robomatic, Usmev, and Camilla Luna, among others. Cymasonic returns with “Monter Sur Le Cochon Norwégien N'est Pas Facil – The Norwegian Remixes” by Sex Judas (Tore Gjedrem), one half of Ost & Kjex, whose prior output spans everything from Dyinamic releases, leftfield Norwegian trash, ‘90s doom metal bands, and avant-disco funk.

In his restless quest for the funk, Sex Judas invites label-mates as well as players from the Norwegian underground scene—Blackbelt Andersen, Human Inferno, Charlotte Bendiks, Magnus international, Melkeveien—to re-imagine originals culled from 2011-2015 releases on Tim Paris’ Marketing label. The mixes are infused with the vigilante attitude, grit, and funk of the current northern scene, as well as analog, slinky, and abstract house. After this scintillating tease, stay tuned for Sex Judas’ full album drop later this winter.

Camilla Luna - Open Up 12" EP (Cymawax)

Cymawax explores the far reaches of our sonic galaxy with its next 12" only release, an exciting seven song set from evocative Uruguayan-Norwegian vocalist Camilla Luna. Camilla is known as one half of Luna & Bazis on WahWah45s, with producer friend BHLB, and as vocalist for Trulz & Robin's releases on Eskimo and Dance Disorder's "Metallic Italic" (Bpitch Control). Her years of improvising vocals with musicians and DJs at renowned Oslo clubs like Blaa, Jeager, and The Villa have given Camilla a knack for accompanying electronic rhythms with haunting, tuneful melodies.

For the Open Up EP, Camilla joins producer BHLB for soulful and raw vocals recorded in one take over futuristic, bass-heavy, and delightfully offbeat tracks. The styles and tempos vary wildly, but the sound throughout is unified in a deceptively organic 'Ex Machina' woman-meets-machine vibe. In the title cut, the almost tribal percussion summons exotic, benevolent spirits when combined with Camilla's temptatious crooning. The twisted R&B of "Wut R U Gwonna DO" could almost be a secret collaboration with the likes of Flying Lotus. And "F.O.C." transmits a slightly intimidating techno stomp that would make all heads on the dance floor turn towards the DJ and immediately take notice. These are just a few of the otherworldly audio nuggets found within the Open Up EP … there are more treasures to unveil. Excavate soulfully.

Trulz & Robin - Agent Acid EP (Cymawax)

Norwegian duo Trulz & Robin throw down the gauntlet with the third vinyl-only statement from the Cymawax label, delivering an acidic take on their patented 'hot and crunchy techno with soul.' The prolific pair from Oslo have been a force in their country's electronic music scene for over two decades, with massive singles for Full Pupp, Eskimo Recordings, and the Cymasonic and Cymawax labels to show for it. Now, the Agent Acid EP finds Trulz & Robin infiltrating the secret lair of a 303 conspiracy and decoding a quartet of sonic documents full of heavy synthesized funk. The EP's title track is a slinky introduction, featuring battling analog squelches and drum machine patterns while a disembodied vocal plays on top. "I Disappear", adding collaborator Brokkoli on the voice, is a more in-your-face effort as its pulsating sequences give way to floor-thrilling breakdowns. The low end might of "Magnetisk Smultring" showcases Trulz & Robin's experimental side, complete with a disconcerting middle passage that soon reveals gentle synth melodies over a hypnotic rhythm section. Then "My Body", the release's closing track, introduces mysterious feelings … percussive clicks and tones build steadily as dub effects, sharp washes, and ominous whispers take hold. The Agent Acid EP is another triumph for Trulz & Robin … a masterclass of covert nightclub maneuvers.

Fede Zerdan - Low Boost EP (Cymawax)

Cymasonic's offshoot vinyl-only label returns with the enigmatic Argentinian artist Fede Zerdan contributing to Cymawax's second outing. Originally from Tucumán, but currently living in Barcelona, Zerdan has established himself as a member of the Discos Paradiso Crew. It's always the heads-down types that are the ones to watch out for and Zerdan exemplifies letting the music do the talking. So what is he saying with the Low Boost EP? Techno is unrivaled when it's at its most deep and immersive.

The first track, "PTN-SONG", features a full-bodied bass that chugs away over atmospheric sounds. Pads establish the mood and delayed notes on the keys mesmerize the listener. "New House" follows with a dubbed-out sci-fi techno experience, depending heavily on the chords and reverb drenched build-ups of LFO synth tension. Continuing the futurism, "One Live Jam" and its acid squelches sound like the distant ping of satellite computers, washed over by a multi-voiced synth wandering through space and time. Finally, "Low Boost" wraps the EP up with its most hypnotic effort hammering the message home. The layers and interplay of the synth tones bring to mind a deeper, slowed-down classic, but really -- it's a work all to its own.

A must have … this techno artifact was meant for wax.
