Camilla Luna - Lost & Found (Cymasonic)

Digging through the archives of one of its most enigmatic artistic figures, Cymasonic have stumbled across an album that’s been hiding in plain sight for the last eleven years. Camilla Luna’s Lost & Found, is exactly as the title suggests, a collection of musical rarities, reimagined in an album where Cymasonic have breathed new life to these undiscovered gems. It features some of the last work Camilla Luna and production partner BHLB might create together, and something of a ‘rescue mission’ for the label, who feared that these tracks might get lost permanently like so many before them, unless they intervened.

Lost & Found is a body of work that consolidates the past, the present, and the future for Camilla Luna as one artistic entity. The shy, reclusive singer catalogues eleven years worth of songs and ideas into a singular body of work with the help of the anonymous BHLB, a mysterious entity in his own right. Re-imagining these scattered moments in a single album has given them a distinct voice in this new context, the tracks finding an unlikely contemporary relationship to each other.

Camilla Luna’s raspy, enigmatic vocals bite and tear at lyrics flirting with concepts of love, friendship, and the realities of a life as a musician, with the technical intent of jazz and the passion of R&B. Finding a happy equilibrium somewhere between Erykah Badu and TLC’s T-Boz, Camilla’s vocals on Lost & Found engage at a literal level, where she draws you into the murky nether world of BHLB’s music. Bold, creeping synth movements orchestrated around restrained beats find that perfect balance between contrast and harmony with Luna’s vocals defining a sound for the creative duo’s extensive career together.

More on Camilla:

Camilla Luna is the versatile voice behind some of the most significant EPs and singles from the Norwegian clubbing world with releases on the likes of Bpitch Control, Eskimo, Bogota, and Cymawax. Born Camilla Molvær Vazquez she is a Norwegian/Uruguayan songstress who was later dubbed Luna, in the Charrúa way by her Uruguayan father. Traversing the worlds of soul, jazz, and R&B through a singular artistic identity, she works comfortably within electronic soundscapes with her strong natural Latin influences often coming to the fore. Hers is a sound that errs on the side of raw, futuristic, wonky, and bumpy with clear references to ’80s funk and hip hop.

Camilla has worked closely with producer BHLB aka Baz (Streetology Studios) since 2006, and although they brought 2016’s seminal Open Up EP to the world, their work together has remained largely hidden with many gems still awaiting release. Some of her previous Camilla’s previous efforts include music on WahWah 45s, People Love Music, and Echorek Records, and she continues to work with established artists like Trulz & Robin, Usmev, and Arildo. Camilla Luna is singular voice for Norwegian club music and beyond.

Usmev - This Vibe EP (Cymasonic)

The half-Norwegian, half-Spanish label Cymasonic is back with some
Catalan deepness straight out of Barcelona in This Vibe, a brand new five track EP by
Usmev. A conservatory-trained pianist and guitarist, Usmev is no stranger to the label having previously released and remixed on multiple singles.
The first track, "That Time", is an exploration in rich, thickly layered chords accompanied by a chunky kick and a rhythm that scatters, close to completely breaking away … a definite party starter. "Sunday Morning Blues" features the vocal magic of fabulous Atlanta-based singer Bleu Renee. It's playful in its claps and other percussive elements while deeply hypnotic in its melody and lyrics, which come from a darker, cautionary, and extremely personal place. "Respect the Elders" follows with a pep to its step and a bass with plenty of bounce to match. Chord stabs rise in classic style while deeper, more sustained notes sneak their way into the listener's headspace. The EP's title track comes in two versions: the original "This Vibe" -- which starts out as a house track but evolves into a more electro-disco affair half way through -- and a slowed down Vocal Edit that is sure to make serious waves this upcoming summer.

Fede Zerdan - Low Boost EP (Cymawax)

Cymasonic's offshoot vinyl-only label returns with the enigmatic Argentinian artist Fede Zerdan contributing to Cymawax's second outing. Originally from Tucumán, but currently living in Barcelona, Zerdan has established himself as a member of the Discos Paradiso Crew. It's always the heads-down types that are the ones to watch out for and Zerdan exemplifies letting the music do the talking. So what is he saying with the Low Boost EP? Techno is unrivaled when it's at its most deep and immersive.

The first track, "PTN-SONG", features a full-bodied bass that chugs away over atmospheric sounds. Pads establish the mood and delayed notes on the keys mesmerize the listener. "New House" follows with a dubbed-out sci-fi techno experience, depending heavily on the chords and reverb drenched build-ups of LFO synth tension. Continuing the futurism, "One Live Jam" and its acid squelches sound like the distant ping of satellite computers, washed over by a multi-voiced synth wandering through space and time. Finally, "Low Boost" wraps the EP up with its most hypnotic effort hammering the message home. The layers and interplay of the synth tones bring to mind a deeper, slowed-down classic, but really -- it's a work all to its own.

A must have … this techno artifact was meant for wax.

Marc Hernandez - The Maturity (Karmaloft Music)

The Karmaloft Music imprint so often hones in on blissful, melodic house productions made for island settings, specifically of the well-documented Balearic vibe. Young Barcelonian producer Marc Hernandez's new four track EP for the label is no exception. The Maturity sees no sense of immediacy as it unfolds beside energized percussion elements. The melodies clearly come from a place of calm, a well of deep emotions pumped up and served within danceable compositions by Hernandez. He's had previous releases on the likes of Ninerecords, Zion Recordings, and Freshportmusic, but if this is to be deemed his coming of age, then it's a bright one with lush strings and bell-like synth tones providing much of the instrumentation. It's 'all aboard' for this first class flight through the sonic airways of the melodious, deep house-dominated islands off the coast of Spain.

Lorenzo al Dino (7th District Inc. / Royal Plastic) - "Great tracks. Solidly produced and deep … what we've come to expect from Karmaloft Music."
Vincent Kwok - "Deep and mellow tracks … very nice!"
Soulfusion (Centric Music) - "Banger!"
