Haldo & Stereo Junkie feat. Silvio Gigante - Higher Ground (Rebus Records)

Aldo “Haldo” Carpanzano has been the resident DJ for the past twenty years at one of the most important clubs in Southern Italy, Rebus Disconight. It’s at this club that he’s played host of some of the more important DJs on the soulful house scene, including Little Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Ralphi Rosario, Victor Simonelli, and many more. Inspired by Rebus Disconight and Haldo’s sonic adventures at the club comes the label Rebus Records. The label’s third release is courtesy of Haldo in collaboration with London’s Stereo Junkie who also does double duty on this single as vocalist under his given name, Silvio Gigante. In the spirit of the Disconight, the tune “Higher Ground” is an uplifting, floor filling house music track with anthem potential. Silvio’s sweet falsetto vocal beckons faces to smile and bodies to groove as Haldo’s original mix compliments this with warm organ chords, tough rhythms, and an effective percussion breakdown. House music bliss! Stereo Junkie also provides his own version, featuring a breaky house beat, an almost Italo-inspired bass line, and dramatic synth chords. The vocals fit easily into this new accompaniment, almost giving this version an evocative 80’s club vibe.

It’s almost as if Haldo’s circle of producer friends lined up to remix these fantastic vocals, as this package features five more reworked treatments. Gianni Sponti, Italian scene veteran and partner with Haldo in Hadogy Records, arrives first with a deeper take on “Higher Ground.” In Gianni’s mix, breezy rhythms, dubby key elements, a bouncy low end, and flowing pads drive Silvio’s vocals forward and into the after hours. The curiously named Odo Makes A Smile is up next, following his recent remix of Haldo’s “Faraway” on Proceed Records. Odo’s take is a more progressive take, though still intimate and underground, with bold synths and snappy drum hits alongside the vocal melody. Another longtime Italian veteran follows, with Rey Pedroso adding some moody, atmospheric magic to “Higher Ground.” This remix is bravely cinematic, bordering on a chill out vibe, with its dramatic pauses, timpani percussion, and string synths. The rhythm picks up as the vocal builds and echoes, adding to a concoction that’s impossible to ignore. Portuguese DJ Miguel Mancha is up next with a driving version aimed squarely at the floor, enhancing the vocal with punchy bass, piano chords, subtle arpeggiations, and, surprisingly, an electrifying guitar solo. Miguel’s also included a dub of his mix that accentuates all of his intricate musical contributions. Last in the queue is Haldo’s regular remix collaborator DJ E-RO (also known as Ettore Rossi) who provides a deep, tech-house flavored remix of “Higher Ground.” Led by a prominent synth bass line, E-RO’s version theatrically builds with its string swells, vibrant percussion, and electronic embellishments. All of this makes for another superb release from the Italian underground ready to spread worldwide. Have a listen.

Eternal City feat. Melanie Gerren - Ego Spanking (Hadogy Records)

Here’s the third release from Hadogy Records, a new house music label spearheaded by renowned Italian DJ Haldo. Haldo has a lengthy production resumé, contributing top tracks and remixes to the likes of Transport Recordings, Conya, Adaptation Music, and his own Proceed Records. Eternal City, a production project consisting of Haldo as well as fellow Italian DJ Gianni Sponti and musician Dom Scuteri, found success with Hadogy’s first releases, “Come To Me,” a collaboration with famed Italo-Disco vocalist Orlando Johnson, and the follow-up single “Games.” Now Eternal City returns for the latest Hadogy release “Ego Spanking,” a fun and sexy deep house track featuring the wonderful vocals of stunning model/singer/actress Melanie Gerren.

Haldo’s worked with Melanie before on tracks like “The Sky” and “I Can’t Wait,” and this new partnership with the other members of Eternal City effortlessly yields another house music staple for nightclub sets. Melanie’s lyrics and delivery are saucy and slightly naughty, guaranteeing a smile and a good time for the dance floor. In Haldo’s Original Mix, punchy keys, a solid four-on-the-floor bounce, and a funky bass line compliment the vocals perfectly creating a bit of house music magic. Haldo also provides his Deep Mix which suggests a more vintage feel through bright strings, a steady low end, and a some added swing to the groove. The other Eternal City members also join in with remix treatments, first with Dom “Mod” Scuteri’s lush and dynamic synth-pad filled version, followed by Gianni Sponti’s subdued yet driving deep ride. As a bonus, the package also contains a mix from a DJ newcomer from Rome, Santo, and his atmospheric, chill-out dub of “Ego Spanking” that’s filled with imaginative sonic surprises. These five cuts make up Eternal City’s brilliant single, boasting a mix for vocal house music DJs of almost any taste.

Eternal City - Games (Hadogy Records)

Hadogy Records is a new label spearheaded by renowned Italian DJ Haldo. Haldo has a lengthy production resumé, contributing top tracks and remixes to the likes of Transport Recordings, Conya, Adaptation Music, and his own Proceed Records. Eternal City, a production project consisting of Haldo as well as fellow Italian DJ Gianni Sponti and musician Dom Scuteri, found success with Hadogy’s debut release “Come To Me,” a collaboration with famed Italo-Disco vocalist Orlando Johnson. Now Eternal City returns for the second Hadogy release “Games,” a track inspired by a moving spoken sample from the sixties.

As with the “Come To Me,” this new single is a family affair with all the members of Eternal City and some of their friends providing remixes of “Games.” First up is Gianni Sponti who blends a deep strut with classic, vintage sounds and textures. Shiny melodies and Rhodes piano lines ride along with the crisp beat, helping to create a winner for the dance-floor. Haldo is next, adding cool piano chords and a slightly techy bass line for a somewhat jazzy, uplifting take on “Games.” Haldo returns for the next mix, in cahoots with Dom Scuteri (aka Mod) who expands on an unreleased Haldo mix from this project. This one’s a gorgeous and loungey deep house version with added saxophone riffs and a gentle late night feel. Another Italian DJ/producer, Nasty (Sound Real), follows with a more electronic-flavored mix, with a pulsing, rhythmic drive and dubbed out, layered effects on the vocal samples and the saxophone. Haldo’s third contribution to the package appears in an acid jazz influenced lounge-house mix that features vibrant live instrumentation by Red Skins. It’s a joy to listen to, harking back to past house music sounds. Finally, Rey Pedroso, who began spinning disco records in the late 70’s and is a member of Orchestra Industrial Automatica, delivers a lush house music rework with a solid bass foundation below swirling pads, hypnotic rhythms, and well-placed breakdowns.

More about the members of Eternal City: Dom created Lemon Records in the 80’s and had chart success with his Black Connection and Time Passing projects, Gianni is an accomplished DJ and supervisor for various compilations including the La Maison series, and Haldo has been prolifically working with some of house music’s best, including remixes for legendary names like Tony Humphries and Victor Simonelli. This is their second single, released on the newly created Hadogy Records.

Eternal City feat. Orlando Johnson - Come Back To Me (Hadogy Records)

Hadogy Records is a new label spearheaded by renowned Italian DJ Haldo. Haldo has a lengthy production resumé, contributing top tracks and remixes to the likes of Transport Recordings, Conya, Adaptation Music, and his own Proceed Records. With this debut release on Hadogy, Haldo joins fellow Italian DJ Gianni Sponti and musician Dom Scuteri to form Eternal City. Their individual experiences on the scene are impressive: Dom created Lemon Records in the 80’s and had chart success with his Black Connection and Time Passing projects, Gianni is an accomplished DJ and supervisor for various compilations including the La Maison series, and Haldo has been prolifically working with some of house music’s best, including remixes for legendary names like Tony Humphries and Victor Simonelli.

The track “Come Back To Me" features the vocals of a legend in his own right, Orlando Johnson. Orlando has been producing and singing on classic records since the late 70’s and is an integral player in Italian dance music history. “Come Back To Me” is presented here in multiple versions, all which excel in part due to Orlando’s powerful, soulful vocals. All of the Eternal City members contribute: Haldo supplies a charged, kinetic dance floor version, Mod Floor (AKA Dom Scuteri) gives the track a pulsing, big room flavor with transformed and effected vocals, and Gianni Sponti provides a deep, dark bump with tribal percussive elements in his mix. In addition, DJ Rey Pedroso, who began spinning disco records in the late 70’s and is a member of Orchestra Industrial Automatica, remixes “Come Back To Me” into a sparse, strictly after-hours track with a slinky low-end and a solid, deep dance floor drive. The most striking version, however, comes courtesy of Philip G. (AKA Philip Greenwill), a Rome-based producer obsessed with Detroit’s Tamla-Motown sound. Philip G.’s version lovingly embraces this retro sound, transforming “Come Back To Me” into a 60’s soul stomper worthy of The T.A.M.I. Show. All in all, it’s an impressive debut for Hadogy Records and certainly whets the appetite for things to come.

Graeme Park - “This is just absolutely wonderful. Highly infectious too. I love it so much that it’s getting a rare 5 stars from me. Superb!”
DJ Craig C (Pound Boys) - “Solid package! Best soulful house release I’ve heard in a long time. Well done!”
Grant Nelson - “Sexy!”
Joey Silvero (Distant People) - “The Gianni Sponti Remix … dreamy sounds and a heavy shaking bass line.”
Eddy Spirit (Spirit Crew) - “A thrilling afro-deep production built around percussive tribal-esque rhythms and heavenly synth melodies. Together with the spell binding vocals these create a hypnotizing feel.”
Edground (Grooveland Music) - “Ah! High music quality here. Love the new vibes and groove from Haldo.”
Stefan Popovic (DiscoTone Radio Show) - “Sponti’s remix is a liquid driver. Hypnosis is peaking in Pedroso’s version.”
Russell Deeks (This Is Why We Dance blog) - “Quality soulful vibes and a good range of mixes.”
Dacha (DeepLink blog) - “Haldo’s version works best for me, deep and spiced with tech sound, but the vocal is still the leader!”
Dino Michael (Godfathers Of House radio show) - “Holy crap this is killer! WOW! I can’t wait to play this … it’s gonna be huge for me on my show and in the clubs.”

Additional support from Marques Wyatt, Benji Candelario, Hippie Torrales, DJ Pope, Doc Link, and Vincent Kwok.
