Tom Appl - Family (Karmaloft Music)

Karmaloft artist Tom Appl has been openly experimenting with sonic styles and textures. He works primarily in the realms of deep and tech-house, but incorporates elements from a more mainstream production world. Also releasing under the pseudonym Fruitroom, Tom has a series of well-regarded singles and remixes for the Karmaloft Music label and has been DJ’ing actively since the early ’90s. This penchant for sonic detail is evident in Tom’s latest single, the soaring and inspirational “Family”. Released on Karmaloft Music, “Family” explores multiple movements in its nine minute running time, beginning with a deep groove that steadily builds into layers of synthesized bliss. Bright arpeggiations and dramatic pads quote earlier electronic music precedents, masterfully placed into a swirling and euphoric modern production. The sparse rhythmic and percussion track rolls at a perfect pace, firmly backing the abundant melodies. Tom also supplies a Short Cut version that edits a few minutes from the original, offering a more direct but just as hypnotic ride.

DJ Pippi & Sandro S - Fatal (Cold Busted)

Italian by name, German by trade, and with a career forged by Ibiza, DJ Pippi once again has hooked up with Sandro S, the name behind one of Italy's top house labels, CibiCaldi Recordings. Together, along with a short vocal feature by Laurance B, they have created a vibe-laden, breezy and jazzy cut for Cold Busted. Chilled, but not lacking in groove, "Fatal" is a rhythmic and classy killer with impeccable timing, landing during a summer where much of the world's attention is focused on Brazil. Using bells, shakers, and a hiccup of vocal chants, a tinge of samba gives way to the refined cool of a balearic touch, both reflective of paradise settings.

Moving on to the remixes, Green Street are three production minded friends that host the Str8 Busted Podcast out of the southeastern United States. Their Dub ups the funk with more prominent guitars and the introduction of a wailing organ melody and stabs. Mojo Rising hails from a Los Angeles rave DJ background, having taken that initial spark and channeled it into academia in order to grow as a downtempo and trip-hop producer. He adds smooth, rhythmic glitches, more booming -- but deep -- bass, and an angelic vocal hymn to the breakdown. Finally, Polish Cold Busted fam LoopMaffia takes a complete departure from the original heading towards experimental electronica with mutating synths, hard-to-place percussive elements, and strange voices fitting of the 'Grim Void' remix title. An included instrumental of the original rounds off another hot Cold Busted release sure to kickstart an idyllic summer.

Fabio Tosti - Talamanca (Transport Recordings)

Summer choon alert! Fabio Tosti (Salted Music, Purple Music, Soulshine) unveils a brand new single on Transport Recordings and it’s a Mediterranean-styled stomper. Named after an Ibizan beach, Tosti’s “Talamanca" is an exotic, island-flavored house music jam that will create dance floor pandemonium at any deserving poolside soiree. Five versions are presented here, led by Fabio’s collaborative mix with K-Max. This Club Mix features a driving broken beat rhythm, rolling Spanish guitar, and rousing piano and saxophone riffs. This one aims squarely at peak time and surely delivers. Transport’s own DJ MFR is up next with his Transporter Mix, presenting a deeper, bass heavy rhythm section accented by fantastic percussion and that gorgeous Spanish guitar. Devid Morrison, who has been making recent waves on Transport, gives a more organic feel with a crisp four-on-the-floor beat, a live sounding bass line, and the guitar brought to the fore. Fabio Tosti rounds out the package with two more versions. His Funkyn Mix is, as the title implies, super-funky with the focus on the saxophone and its energetic melodies. Finally, Tosti’s H23 Club Mix revisits elements of the first mix blending it into a breezier, more percussive treatment. It’s a winner for the summertime from Transport Recordings.
