DJ Sulli & 5657 - I Know My Future (Innerflight Music)

Veteran west coast house music DJ/producers Sean Sullivan and Cody Nasir, teaming up under the name DJ Sulli & 5657, return to Innerflight for the new single “I Know My Future,” featuring remixes from Ralph Falcon (Murk) and Pezzner.

DJ Sulli has a long history in the west coast house scene, inspired by such bay area legends as DJ Spun and Wicked crew DJs Thomas and Jeno. His Amfibius label was a definite player on the scene, releasing vinyl singles from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Alexander East, and Rick Preston. Sulli’s production activities have found him collaborating with 5657, a prominent DJ from the Lake Tahoe/Reno scene. Together they’ve combined Sulli’s ‘soul-tech’ sound with 5657’s funkier leanings for a fresh dance-floor house music style.

Propelled by a spacious vocal line, “I Know My Future” bursts out of the speakers with a powerful groove and a deep sensibility, providing the perfect soundtrack for late night house music gatherings. Miami’s Ralph Falcon delivers a re-rub of the track complete with a playful drum arrangement, menacing synth stabs to underscore the vocal hook, and a crisp but dark vibe. Acclaimed deep house virtuoso Pezzner rounds out the release with his gyrating rendition. A gnarly, modulated synth bass expertly draws in the dance floor, as Pezzner’s adept rhythm programming propels the vocal hook to new heights. All three versions are accompanied by instrumentals or dubs, adding up to another stellar pack from the Innerflight camp.

Various Artists - Sixteen (Chillin Music)

Chillin Music signals the end of 2016 with an exciting 16 track compilation given the corresponding title of Sixteen. With over a decade of releases spanning the deep and tech house sphere there are plenty of hot options to choose from when assembling a Chillin Music collection. The powers-that-be at Chillin have indeed chosen wisely, and these cuts derive from the label’s recent output as well as featuring many new and unreleased cuts.

Highlights include Pezzner’s remix of Rob Slac & Alec’s “Sounds Right”, the spectacular Roy Davis Jr. remix of Ovidio’s “Get On Up”, and “Dramarama”, Brett Johnson’s rollicking collaboration with vocalist / DJ Red Eye. Chillin Music also has a knack for sussing out new talent, and cuts from Lion González (remixed by label co-founder John Stuart) and Sepehr (with remixes from Rob Slac and Mr. Harting) certainly deliver. Also represented on the full compilation are the likes of Sleazy McQueen, Alexander Maier, Jonas Saalbach, Alvaro Ernesto, Still Rob G, Homero Espinosa, and even more. It’s a jam-packed amalgamation, and should get listeners psyched up for Chillin Music’s 2017 schedule.

Onionz - Space Slave (Uniting Souls Music)

The latest release on respected Seattle house music imprint Uniting Souls features New York house music legend Onionz. Label founder Ramiro goes way back with Onionz, with the two becoming friends in San Francisco during the heyday of the '90s scene. This EP Is a reunion of sorts, rekindling the creative energies shared between these two house music pioneers for almost two decades.

Onionz's contribution is the cosmically titled "Space Slave" – perhaps a reference to a certain metal-bikini'd intergalactic princess? – and it's a sublime excursion into beat-driven deep tech house. The track builds masterfully over its seven minutes, with echoed arpeggiations and groovy rhythmic elements pulsing in and out of the mix. "Space Slave" is then punctuated by the emergence of a moody, psychedelic synth melody at its peak, evoking the feeling of space travel via the dance floor.

The release also unites vibes from coast to coast, with remixers from three different corners of the US. Seattle's Pezzner opens up proceedings with a haunting feel, displaying his expert combination of beats and atmospheric textures. Pezzner has also supplied a second version of his mix, featuring a subtle shuffle at a slightly speedier tempo. Next up is Los Angeles producer duo Knoe1 and Jordan Strong (a Uniting Souls resident since 1998) delivering a chugging warehouse vibed rework perfectly suited for the after hours. Brian Busto, of Florida's Serious Soul crew, then turns in a dark-as-night remix of "Space Slave", filled with throbbing bass, ominous soundscapes, and crisp machine rhythms. The release closes with San Diego's Jason Tokita whose hypnotic treatment of the track goes deep, and includes some dialogue snippets captured from distant orbit.

NRVS LVRS - City Lights Remixes (Green Gorilla Lounge)

Green Gorilla Lounge returns to the fray with a top tier set of remixes of "City Lights", a cool song by acclaimed San Francisco-based indie band NRVS LVRS. "City Lights" was the first single off The Golden West, NRVS LVRS's debut album released earlier this year. The powers-that-be at Green Gorilla headquarters fell in love with the song and quickly envisioned a plan for more dance floor-oriented interpretations. Fellow conspirators Sleight of Hands, Pezzner, Tone of Arc, and the duo of Lucas Hulan & Petr Braun were enlisted, and this outstanding release is the result.

GGL's in-house heroes Sleight of Hands – made up of DJ M3 and Phil Collis – provide the first version, which is filled with big stomping beats and dirty bass lines and utilizes the original's vocal in a particularly moody manner. This one's a late night monster. Seattle's Pezzner (Freerange, Systematic) is up next, and his remix will certainly satisfy all the Pezz-heads out there. Pezzner's main mix and dub both feature the creative rhythmic high jinks and clearly produced sonics that this masterful tunesmith is known for. Tone of Arc, a quickly rising project formed by Derrick Boyd AKA Dead Seal, delivers a cinematic treatment peppered with distinctive sound design moments and cavernous percussion blasts over its entrancing deep house foundation. Czech producers Lucas Hulan & Petr Braun (Nightphunk Recordings) then close things out with a shimmering rework that samples and manipulates the vocal while it provides spaced-out aural scenery for the dance floor.

Laurent Garnier - "Pezzner's mixes for sure."
Phonogenic (Moodmusic / Turbo) - "I'm really digging this. The Sleight of Hands remix is serious business."
Larry Tee - "Pezzner's remixes are lovely." Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "The Sleigh of Hands remix … sexy!"
Tensnake - "Very nice Pezzner remixes."
Chris Fortier (Fade) - "Some great remixes here."
Lars Behrenroth (Deeper Shades of House) - "I'm loving the Pezzner remixes!"
Shahrokh Dini (Shahrokh Sound of K / Compost) - "Nice release … the Sleight of Hands remix is good."
Jamie Kidd (BYC Music / Box of Kittens) - "Sleight of Hands and Tone of Arc mixes get the vibe … right on!"
Ulysses (Neurotic Drum Band) - "Great stuff here … all killer, no filler."
Tyler Stadius (Deepsite / Dialtone Records) - "The Pezzner remixes slay! Super addictive poppy concoctions."
Anthony Mansfield (Roam Recordings / Hector Works) - "Nice package. The Sleight of Hands mix has the swagger."
Strictly Underground Music (music blog) - "We can't stop playing the Sleight of Hands remix … great tune, beautifully produced, super grooving sound. Gotta love those claps!"
Manel Sanmartin (Cambrils DEEP) - "Wow … awesome release! The singer has a very sensual voice."
KP London (FEEL Radio Show) - "The Lucas Hulan & Petr Braun remix is just what the people need … well done!"
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) - "Fantastic! What a package we have here. Pezzner comes out on top for me with those rich, deep grooves but all of these mixes will be used with pleasure."
