Jeromy Nail - Farewell Dialogue (Innerflight Music)

Seattle’s Innerflight Music has returned with the first of three singles by longtime Pacific northwestern underground house music advocate Jeromy Nail. As part of the Uniting Souls Music collective since the early 2000s, Jeromy sharpened his DJ’ing skills on many late night dance floors, including residences at the seminal Flammable Sundays – the West Coast’s longest running house weekly twenty years strong – and the (now defunct) electronic dance music haven See Sound Lounge. With releases and remixes for the likes of Viva Recordings, Hype & Soul, House Call, and, of course, the Uniting Souls label, Jeromy's been busy on the scene.

"Farewell Dialogue" is a brooding, cinematic undertaking rooted in a four-on-the-floor foundation but with a distinctly non-peak hour ethic. The track is intricately constructed with layers of synth pads, strings, and melodic elements buoyed by its tough rhythm and bass pairing. Vancouver's Jay Tripwire continues his stunning string of audio explorations with two cool remixes of Jeromy's original. Jay delivers strong with a nine minute main mix and a shorter 'dub' mix, stripping the original to its essentials and infusing it with his heady house, dub, and techno amalgam. The results are mesmerizing and a perfect fit for underground after hours adventures.

Kohib & Kahuun - EP2 (Beatservice Records)

Phase two of the Bergen-Tromsø house alliance! For the second time on Beatservice Records, Kahuun and Kohib – two beardy and nice chaps – have put their heads together to collaborate, but not as a duo as one would expect. It's the same procedure as their first shared EP: one track each, and then a remix of each other's respective track.

Kahuun is a part of the electronic scene in Bergen. He released his debut EP in 1999 on Paper Recordings, and has released a string of EPs on various labels. His early tracks were in a jazzy broken-beat style, but lately he's been leaning more towards four-on-the-floor house and techno. "Sangefjell" is a potent four-on-the-floor groover, complete with a solid bass foundation, layers of percussive elements, and a rising 303-ish filtered synth line. After hours night club funk, indeed.

Kohib is an important member of the Tromsø electronic music scene, equally as a club organizer, DJ, and producer. His debut was on the Prima Norsk 3 compilation in 2005, followed by an album, a remix-album, and a string of highly regarded EPs and digital singles. Kohib's contribution, with the un-Norwegian title of "Pittsburgh", moodily moves through synthesizer swells and pulsations as reverbed percussion and stereo effects populate its sonic space. The tension is eased by a pleasant, almost theremin-like lead line.

The remixes are playful reinterpretations, with Kohib accentuating the funkiness of "Sangefjell" through heavy hand claps, a tighter entwining of the bass and 303 lines, and a dreamy vocal phrase. This one's got maximum boogie appeal. Not to be outdone, Kahuun surprises with a tough drum n' bass rendition of "Pittsburgh". More than half the track is taken up by its intro – which, upon listening, seems the perfect length – before the breakbeats come in over the throbbing bass and swirling, melodic psychedelia. It's a brilliant cap to this EP, and shows how these two producers continue to inspire each other in wonderful, off-beat ways.

Larry Tee - "I'm loving this!"
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "So good!"
Flash Atkins (Paper Recordings / Into The Valley) - "The two handsomest men in Norway deliver four damn fine cuts."
Sleazy McQueen (Whiskey Disco) - "Icy techno!"
Hardway Bros (A Love From Outer Space) - "Great stuff!"
Sumsuch (Colour and Pitch / Mega Jawns) - "I love the build on 'Sangefjell' … in fact both originals are tickling me in all the right places."
Anthony Mansfield (Roam Recordings / Hector Works) - "Deep and chuggin' … this is my jam!"
Atish (Desert Hearts / Robot Heart) - "Nice subtle acid touches on 'Sangefjell'."
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "Superb vibes. It's really tough to choose just one … all four cuts are sonic joys!"
Adam Warped (Whiskey Pickle / Strange Days) - "I'm really feeling both original versions and loving the retro vibes of the Kohib remix. Looking forward to playing these out."
ROBOT84 (Paper Recordings / Under No Illusion) - "Oh, yes. Superb."
DJ Firefly (Couch Dancing Radio Show) - "So groovy and complex … I could listen to this all night."
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) - "Awesome again from these techno futurists … lethal!"

Snax (Box Office Poison) Interviewed and In The Mix

American born / Berlin based musician, producer and performer Snax has just released a new single on his own Random Records imprint. Instead of his own artist name, the single – "One Good Thing" – has been released under the Box Office Poison moniker. It's a buoyant house music experience, further fueled by the accomplished and pleasing vocals of Adam Joseph, and accompanied by remixes from Jad & The Ladyboy and BonomoLeMagass (a duo consisting of Snax and ex-Manhooker frontman Mavin LeMagass). You can listen to a preview of the single HERE.

Snax just sent us a new Box Office Poison DJ mix that we're eager to listen to, but first we asked the busy DJ / producer to answer a few questions:

First of all, why Box Office Poison?

Snax: Joan had a meeting with Mr. Mayer who unceremoniously dumped her from her contract at MGM Pictures. The reason? ‘Critics have labeled you BOX OFFICE POISON’ was his cold and heartless explanation.

In a rage, Joan destroyed her rose garden, while her adopted children looked on in horror. Tina, bring me the ax!

What makes a Box Office Poison release different than a Snax release?

Snax: Snax releases are electronic soul / pop. To me, pop is a hybrid and distillation of all my influences, which are many.

Box Office Poison on the other hand is pure house … and all that entails. The passion, the heat, the sweat. I wanted to create an outlet to release no nonsense beat music. There are elements of pop structure, but the point is to keep it loose, free, and totally for the dance floor.

How did Adam Joseph become involved? Is he a regular collaborator with Box Office Poison?

Snax: I met Adam Joseph when he did a live / DJ set at the notorious Pork party in Berlin. My good friend Brian Claflin (may he rest in peace) asked me to fill in for his usual hosting spot that night. Brian said, ‘I think you’ll like this guy.’

I was a bit concerned when I realized Adam was about to do a Whitney Houston cover, but as soon as he opened his mouth I was hooked! Collaboration was inevitable.

I’m still working with Adam, together with my songwriting and producing partner Mavin (ex-Manhooker), and I think we make quite a good team, if I do say so myself, and I do. So there.

Any interesting facts or stories about “One Good Thing”?

Snax: I invited Adam over to my makeshift East Berlin studio to record. The vocal booth collapsed. Adam was just too fierce!

The track originated from an unreleased remix I did for Manhooker. I sent the instrumental to Adam and he chirped those great lyrics about whore-ing around and looking for love. We had just met yet somehow he knew the story of my life!

What can you tell us about this new DJ mix?

Snax: I’ll be making Box Office Poison mixes every season. This one is for summer. I raise the humidity with goodies from my fave labels at the moment; Exploited, Rebirth, Meant, Defected … plus some classics and of course some of my own productions.

What’s in store for Box Office Poison and Snax?

Snax: Further Box Office Poison remixes and releases are on the horizon and this weekend I’m doing my first DJ night booked as BOP at Vogue Fabrics in London. And they’ll be more of those to come …

I’m finishing my fourth full Snax album. Release info is pending, but I’m EXTREMELY proud of this one so get ready. I’m a planet and you’re my moon.

Now please enjoy Box Office Poison in the mix:

Jeromy Nail - Amphibians (Uniting Souls Music)

Uniting Souls Music returns for the imprint's twenty third release with "Amphibians" by longtime Seattleite and Uniting Souls resident Jeromy Nail.

With releases and remixes for the likes of Viva Recordings, Build It Records, Bomb Recordings, Hype & Soul, House Call, and, of course, the Uniting Souls label, Jeromy’s been busy on the scene.

Built around chopped vocals and double-bass samples overlaid with moody pads and melodic elements, the "Amphibians" original mix emits a quirky flavor rooted in a four-on-the-floor foundation. The dub mix re-contextualizes the original elements in a deeper, minimal, bass-laden context that could be taken as ‘micro house.’

First up on remix duties, Philadelphia’s Pete Moss delivers an extended, stripped-down mix of the original that’s sprinkled with the vocal and melodic phrasing and fortified by a tougher bass line. Portland-based Jon Cates, best known for his work with Om Records as part of Cates&dpL, also provides a take on "Amphibians" with a deep, driving tech-house infused version, keeping the energy level high with layered percussion and drum elements, thick bass, and subtle textures that capture the essence of the original but take it down a fresh new path.

Gene Farris - "Deep!"
Chris Fortier (Fade) - "The Pete Moss remix is just right, and the Jon Cates mix is good, too."
DJ Craig C (Pound Boys) - "Good deep stuff here!"
Craig Whitfield (The HHA / Restless Soul) - "I really like the Pete Moss remix. Sounds great up loud with that killer bass line."
Inland Knights - "The original's got a nice swing to it … also digging the Pete Moss remix."
Nutritious (SpinSpinNYC) - "'Amphibians' is excellent. Swimming. The remixes are great, too."
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "Very nice … the dub and Pete Moss remix shade it for me, but it's a cool package all round."
DJ Nova (Nova Planet Radio Show) - "I love the sound of the dub … it's so trippy and reminds me of '90s house music."
DJ Zach (Subtronic End Radio Show) - "Solid house music. I love the pulsing bass on Jon Cates' mix."
Tariq Ziyad (New Urban ERA) - "Lovely deep sounds to get lost in."
Eric Davenport (Guesthouse) - "Top notch production on all versions. House music at its best."
