Magnus Asberg - Into U (Viva Recordings)

Viva Recordings looks toward London-by-the-Sea for an expressive new single from Brighton’s veteran DJ force-of-nature Magnus Asberg. After a thirty year history behind the decks, in the studio, and organizing hundreds of debaucherous parties, Magnus’s ear for quality sounds has held the respect of those in-the-know for a long while. Under his own name as well as through this pseudonym C-Soul, Magnus has released tunes with an esteemed group of labels including DIY Discs, Plastic City, Ornate Music, and his own Romana Records.

Magnus’s latest for Viva, “Into You”, launches with a tight, skippy house music rhythm. Bright chords and panning piano-like sparkles add the vibe while a punchy sub-bass bubbles underneath. Vocal snips and sung phrases bat in and out, guiding the deepness further to the underground. The ‘b-side’ remix comes from the legendary Canadian producer Jay Tripwire who delivers an exquisite Deependub. Jay’s take is spacey and spacious, brandishing shots of reverb and sustained tonal textures throughout its runtime. These cuts are for the most intimate of late nights, as bodies vibrate hypnotically on a darkened dancefloor.

Various Artists - Uniting Souls Winter 2020 Compilation (Uniting Souls Music)

With over 15 years of transmitting deep house beats into the stratosphere, Uniting Souls Music offers a radiant snapshot of the imprint with its Winter 2020 Compilation. Jay Tripwire - Ika (Harmonious Discord)

This fall, sonic crevasses are filled with the unnerving sounds of spook and spoil. The once unsettling tones provide a feeling of nostalgia and a platform for music to tap into those sentiments. Arguably, one of the canonical artists when it comes to the witchy and abstract world of techno and house music is Canada’s Jay Tripwire. He is a household name in techno circles and has been producing music for over 25 years on powerhouse labels like Nordic Trax, Nervous, Viva and most recently through his own imprint Witching Hour. Harmonious Discord is happy to welcome Jay to the label with a very special release offered both digitally and via limited vinyl pressing (200 copies).

Ika is a collection of tunes with a common abstraction. Mature enough for a headphone listen but still relevant on the dance floor. The project starts out with “Wokd,” a dizzy concoction of slippery sound design and abrasive percussion. Next up is “Wormholes”, a penetrating acid house sonnet with whispered conversations and bin-rattling bass. Austin’s Jeff Scroggin reworks “Wormholes” into a tightly-shuffled — yet melodically-driven — selection for lighter moments in your warehouse adventure. Jeff’s take combines the haunting undertones of the original with powerful house essentials. The main event are two tremendous techno versions of “Ika” (the Japanese word for squid but sometimes used for certain cuttlefish). The RAW OG Vinyl Mix is a headstrong, percussive techno masterpiece reminiscent of earlier minimal techno selections. Everything is carefully placed, and tones bounce off each other while creating a syncopated space that moves the selection along. The additional “Ika” revisit plays off the same sampled themes of the original but with a formulated bass foundation giving it a pronounced strut missing from the original. These selections will take one on a journey into the uncharted mind of artist Jay Tripwire.

Haris Custovic (Laus Music) – “Top gear from a top man such as Jay!”
Christian Martin (Dirty Bird) – “Sick EP! So groovy.”
Colin Dale (Abstrakt Dance Records) - “Solid EP with all cuts working well. Will rotate and support.”
Ivaylo (Bogota Records) – “Always deep power from Jay. Love this.”
Magnus Asberg (On The House Records) – “Oh yes! Tasty. We like this one.”
Andrew Duke (Andrew Duke In The Mix – “Great to have this superb new material from Jay.”
Harry Avers (NOICE! Radio Show) – “If Jay is not an Electronic Music God, he is at least a minor deity. Really nice work here.”
Taigo Onez (Bane Le’ Dex Radio) – “This is so righteous! Full support.”
Jon Fugler (XLNT Radio Show) – “Some lovely late night vibes here. Scroggin’s mix coming out on top by a whisker, and all are deeply enjoyable.”
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) “Jay always nails it, and here is more proof of his talent. Absolutely killer!”

Jeromy Nail - Cinétique / Rise (Innerflight Music)

Innerflight Music set sail from their Northwest enclave of Seattle with Jeromy Nail at the helm, along with a talented set of remixers on deck, including Jay Tripwire, Spon.10.80 (aka Rhines), and Zacharia with the “Cinétique / Rise” EP. Jeromy Nail anchored the West Coast house music scene with Uniting Souls Music beginning in the early 2000s. His seminal sets can be heard at legendary Flammable Sundays (the West Coast’s longest running house weekly, now twenty years strong) and various underground parties in the Seattle area. With releases and remixes for the likes of Viva Recordings, Build It Records, Bomb Recordings, Prison Entertainment, Radda Records, and Uniting Souls, Jeromy has been busy on the scene.

Cruise director Jeromy Nail sets forth with the well-named “Rise,” a deftly produced number whose tension mounts in synth washes to explosive percussive techno that’s sure to incite all to rise and get on the dancefloor. “Cinétique” is a late-night foray into polyrhythmic tech-house with buoyant pads, keys, and minimal vocals.

Tech-house maven Jay Tripwire remixes “Rise,” laying bare the original with minimal tech and driving bass for a late-night romp. Spon.10.80 brings a progressive flavor to “Rise” with acid-inspired percussion offset by stomping low frequencies. Zacharia of 360 BPM fame follows with a hypnotic, slow-burning remix of “Cinétique.” Taken together, the “Cinétique / Rise” EP is a cruise through both placid and roiling waters of late-night revelry.

Pezzner (Freerange) – “Cinematic, full gorgeous house tunes here throughout.”
Tyler Stadius (Deepsite) – “Big Sound. Looking forward to playing Rise soon.”
Nick Warren (Hope Recordings) – “Rise is great!”
DJ Harri (Sub Club) – “Jay Tripwire’s Remix is for me.”
