Kali G - Equinox EP (Wind Horse Records)

Wind Horse Records ventures to Morocco to uncover Kali G, a DJ and producer of much local renown as well as a history in the clubs of Ibiza and Spain (where he was a resident of Catedral Club Sevilla). With previous releases on Desertica Records, We Love, and Y Serious?, Kali G has joined the Wind Horse family with an impressive three track release. The Equinox EP confidently displays his tight deep house sound, sprinkled with what Kali G calls 'spiritual waves' and the occasional sample from traditional Moroccan music.

"Equinox" opens the release with a snappy and funky drum track, followed by a rhythmic cut-up vocal of unknown origin, exotic high pitched embellishments, and quick snatches of percussion. This one's a definite mood setter. "Fire Dancer" follows with a more commanding low end and some distant chants to prepare the dance floor for the journey. The rhythm is insistent and pounding, giving the impression of a steadfast march to some sacred place. The EP closes with "Nadam", a gentler and dubbier effort from Kali G that explores the stereo sphere with layers of pads, ethnic vocals, and bright melodies. This one builds nicely and emotionally, and showcases the distinctive elements in this promising producer's toolkit. Kali G's Equinox EP delivers deep house with a difference.

Rory Hoy vs. Kitten & The Hip - Dirty Little Secret (Super Hi-Fi Recordings)

Following on his previous single for Super Hi-Fi Recordings – the boisterous "Hey Everybody!" – Rory Hoy has delivered a summertime heater in collaboration with Brighton duo Kitten & The Hip. "Dirty Little Secret" qualifies as capital 'F' funk, with a Prince-esque stew of choppy guitar, popped bass lines, pitch-bent synth chords, and a crisp, rollicking rhythm track. Kitten & The Hip – otherwise known as the duo of Scarlett Quinn (vocalist with Netsky and Mark Lower) and Ashley Slater (Freakpower) – respectively deliver a sexy-time vocal and a cheeky rap that adds the fuel to this funky fire. "Dirty Little Secret" is also presented in remixed form, and the line-up is appropriately out-of-control. Ursula 1000, Fort Knox Five, Brazil's Trotter, and the collaboration of Turntill and Merlin all push the envelope of the original's party-time dancing-in-the-sunshine vibe. There's plenty here to give the dance floor a stratospheric boost … this groove's a secret no more.

Ursula 1000 - "Really, all the mixes kick ass. Fort Knox 5 wins by a hair."
Nick Catchdubs (Fool's Gold) - "Smooth."
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "Super nice vibe."
Belabouche (Midnight Riot / DiscoDat) - "Great Ursula 1000 remix here."

SimonG (Deep South Audio, New Zealand) - "Diamond beats and chunks of sexy funk … a winner."
Tariq Ziyad (Nu Urban ERA) - "I love this, especially Fort Knox Five's remix. Dope and fly."
Jamie Topham (CDPool) - "Great original cut and remix package. Rory Hoy and friends always get the party going."

Josiah Fontenot - Lazy Brute (Harmonious Discord)

Josiah Fontenot first made an appearance with an oddly spacey tune on the sixth installment if Harmonious Discord's annual Discordian Dreaming compilation under the moniker El Natured. Since then he has been sending the label collections of blissful hardware recordings that pay homage to the defining electronic sounds of the early 2000s. Josiah Fontenot's first EP under his full name – titled Lazy Brute – is a collection warm analog offerings with many beautiful shades of imperfection.

The EP starts off with the original of "Lazy Brute", providing full frontal distorted drum work alongside some well-tempered acid lines. It progresses into a fully flourished set of conjoining melodies and accents that define it as a proper head trip. Rising producer Ivan Dbri partners up with Rocko to take the forward nature of "Lazy Brute" and put it in the context of a signature New York house sound. With hints of garage and an earth-quaking bass line the remix gives disciplined structure to the abstract nature of the original. "The Cold Winter Wind" changes directions to a minimally constructed, bell-driven deep house vibe. Remnants of early Jeff Samuel and Villalobos works flutter around with artistic, playful synth and drum accents. This tune rides the barrier of techno and house in a way that will compliment many HD's multi-genre artists. Texas DJ staple Joshua Kynd has been enlisted for the remix, under his deeper moniker Tobor Rellik. Josh gives "The Cold Winter Wind" a playful tech-house bounce while keep the mood light and melody driven. Heavy attractions enter the arena as the piece moves forward, making for a great tool to fill the floor. The final track, "Knight Moves", is more of a proper tech-house workout, complete with heavy bass lines, 80s accents, and lots of pitch bent pads for keeping the dance floor 'tubular'.

Nadja Lind (Klartraum / Lucidflow Records) - "Cool stuff. I will play the Ivan Dbri and Rocko remix."
Spettro (Get Physical) - "The Ivan Dbri and Rocko Remix is super hot. I will be playing this one for sure."
Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "The Tobor Rellik remix is wicked … definitely something I can work into my sets."

Adam Warped (Whiskey Pickle / Strange Days) - "'Knight Moves' has just the right amount of quirkiness for my sets."
Andy Stroble (Get Physical Music / ++plus plus) - "Tobor Rellik's 'The Cold Winter Wind' remix takes a good track and does cool things with it that make you move."
DJ P-Rez (Not So Fast Records) - "I love the variety. 'Knight Moves' might be my pick, but there are a couple others which will definitely find their way into my sets."
Jon Manley (hOUSEwORX Radio Show) - "Classy deep house."
DJ Zach (Subtronic End Radio Show) - "'The Cold Winter Wind' actually has a summer vibe!"
