Frederick Alonso - Tides feat. Denitia (DeepWit Recordings)

As DeepWit Recordings celebrates a decade of releasing quality deep house, organic house, and electronica in 2021, the label brings “Tides feat. Denitia,” a stellar new single from Belgian producer Frederick Alonso. Included are two remixes, one from the up-and-coming South African producer Donluiz Musicue (House Afrika, Soulique Felas Music) and DeepWit’s own label head Alvaro Hylander.

“Tides” stands out not just for its overarching classic feel but also for the stunning vocals from Denitia. Also lauded in the virtual pages of Pitchfork, Stereogum, and The Guardian, no less than The Fader hailed Denitia’s voice as “the epitome of soulful”. Her vocals are at the forefront of “Tides,” a track steeped in a sun-drenched vibe thanks in part to pads that invoke the movement of the oceans. This is the sound of deep house ushering in the sun.

Alvaro Hylander does justice to “Tides” and its outstanding vocals with a remix that offers up everything one could want in a soulful, deep house track. Hylander delivers pure quality through the driving force of the organic bass line and the revamped vocal treatment. Next, Donluiz Musicue comes at “Tides” from a laid back direction that’s suitable for dubbed-out Sunday afternoon sessions. There are times when less is more and this is a track that fits that perfectly.

Rounding out the release is the Deep Waters Mix, invoking the mood of its title — darker and even deeper than the original version. With its hypnotic melody and turbulent soundscape, this is a track for those late, late nights.

To sum it up, this is what deep house music on DeepWit sounds like after over a 1000 tracks released and no intent on stopping anytime soon.

Boogie Belgique - Volta (Cold Busted)

"Nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie." That's how Belgian DJ producer Boogie Belgique (AKA Oswald Cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. Taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producer's forte. This is pleasingly evident on Volta, the latest Boogie Belgique album for the Cold Busted label.

"Jungle Law" gives a glimpse into Boogie Belgique's sonic palette. Tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. Soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. Album opener "Go Slow" shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. It's a beautiful concoction, and Boogie Belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. Volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

Sonz of the Pitch - Samba Anna EP (Patsada Records)

Sonz of the Pitch are a funky Belgian house music duo made up of Phil Nobel and Ricardo Martins. With previous releases including their well-received debut on Patsada and the Welcome Home EP for Gourmand Recordings, the pair look to light up DJ booths and dance floors across Europe and beyond. This new single for Patsada Records -- the Samba Anna EP -- features three choice, percussive cuts that feature an abundance of punch and club-driving grooves. "Samba Anna" opens the single with a playful chant over a solid rhythmic base … drum fills and a latin touch help make this one a treat for the dancers. It's accompanied by a 'dub' version that gives the crisp, banging rhythm section some close attention. This one's a perfect late night groove ready to accelerate a party into overdrive. "After The Dance" closes out the release, bringing on a slightly darker vibe but not without a bit of swing and a formidable after-hours slink. Its flow is hypnotic and certainly infectious. The Sonz of the Pitch come correct.

Moodprint - Moodprint (Cold Busted)

Cold Busted takes a step outside what one might expect from the label with a new self-titled release from Moodprint. Then again, it's really nothing unusual from a label that's never ever easy to pin. Taken in the context of beats with complex rhythms and samples derived from soul, funk, and the like, Moodprint fits right in; they just approach things from a more futuristic slant. An innovative crossover between electronic, hip-hop, bass, funk, and ambient sounds, this project brings to mind the dominant Soulection Crew, who've already made note of them with the release of Moodprint's D'Angelo bootleg. The Belgian duo's other home has been Tangram Records and their work has gotten support from LeFtO, 22tracks, Up High Collective, and international radio stations in the form of airplay.

Made up of nine tracks, Moodprint's eponymous album is syrupy. Bright melodies, heavily sweetened synths, well-sourced vocals, and no-stone-left-unturned rhythms make it a treat to digest. Opener "Storyboard" quickly sets the pace with a folk-like -- but totally electronic -- neuroticism. "Prophet" follows with intergalactic funk swagger, only hitting the brakes for dramatic effect. The subdued maturity showed on the elegant, future R&B / hip-hop cut "Flash" is a particularly shining moment for the release. "'96 JuKnow!" and "McElove" are bubbly and emphatically chord-heavy, tip-toeing towards the beloved early post-garage work of Mount Kimbie. By the end, an impression is made as Moodprint embraces and cements their name in sound.

Quincy Jointz (Timewarp Music) - "Fresh, groovy, soulful … a dope release."
Lo Tide (Organik Recordings) - "Superb set of downbeat grooves and vocal slices. So many lush soundscapes you can just drift away …"
Minus 8 (Compost / Stereo Deluxe) - "Sounds fresh and very modern."
Danny Massure (Spring Strut / Ticklejunk) - "Tasty textures and sexy vibes."
Shantisan (Salted Soul / One Note Samba) - "Nice and intelligent downbeats."
Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe) - "This is curiously modern."
Feodor AllRight (AMDJS Radio Show, Russia) - "Pure bliss!"
Aja Allsop (Ketch A Vibe Radio Show) - "Absorbs your soul … so, so good."
Velanche (Club 91 Radio Show) - "A really good selection of chilled beats … great stuff!"
DJ Tomas (ForwardEver / Umoja HiFi) - "Innovative beat production … great twists and turns. Headphone friendly but some good tracks for the club, too."
Lemar Soulflower (Soul Deep NYC) - "Futuristic left of center beat-crafting that really grooves."
DJ Nova (Rodon FM, Greece) - "This is excellent … it turns the page to the label’s future."
Robert Lochmann (Jazzmadass Radio Show, Germany) - "Top notch nu-breed electro-funk. No weakness in the freakiness. The guys learnt their lessons well."
