Lauren Flax - In the Night (feat. Jo Lampert) (Get Up Recordings)

Get Up Recordings gets deep with Lauren Flax’s new single, “In the Night (feat. Jo Lampert)”. Miami-born legend Mystic Bill takes the track on an even further journey with his entrancing remix.

Lauren Flax, originally from Detroit, is a NYC-based DJ, songwriter, and producer. She is currently a member of the band CREEP with long-time collaborator Lauren Dillard and holds a monthly party with Gavin Russom called C//ty Club in Brooklyn. Flax was also the Fischerspooner tour DJ from 2008 - 2011. Her debut single, “You’ve Changed”, was released on DJs Are Not Rockstars, an indie dance label run by Mark Davenport and Alexander Technique and featured vocals by Sia of Zero7 fame. In 2010, Sia re-recorded the track and released it as her first single from the album We Are Born.

Flax is no stranger to Get Up Recordings, having remixed Alinka’s track “You’re Basic” back in 2014. “In the Night” sees her really honing in on her unique abilities as a songwriter. The lyrics were made for vocalist Jo Lampert’s voice to take full advantage of, and she does so, one hundred percent. The bass line and echoing effects of the keys really add depth to this already dark late-night track. Lauren also throws in the Flaxy Dub for good measure, with the same vital key elements as the original and just as smooth.

Taking on the remix duties for the release is Mystic Bill. His introduction to the dance music scene began during his teen years while growing up in Miami. While working at Flamingo Record Pool, which was run by Bill Kelly (WMC fame) and Richard McVay, he discovered house music. The promos with acid and house mixes from Chicago really captured his attention so much that he moved there to be a part of the happening scene. He held residencies with many of the now Chicago legends -- Johnny Fiasco, Ralphie Rosario, Derrick Carter, and Mark Farina. He started to produce, with his first remix being for Kay Ladrae’s track “Lack of Love”, and has had releases on Trax Records, Relief, and Swing Street. Mystic Bill also has future releases coming out on Classic Music Company, Rong Music, and Snuff Traxx. For his remix of “In the Night”, he takes it on a twelve-minute-plus journey and really drives it home with the constant beats of the percussion and repetition of the beautifully haunting vocals. He allows the listener to get lost in the music, but doesn’t let them know that twelve minutes have passed and that is the real magic of it.

Playless - You Got Me So (Whiskey Pickle)

Barcelona-based producer Playless makes his second appearance on Whiskey Pickle with two smoking tracks: "You Got Me So" and "Free". Those tapped for remixes include the debut of Whiskey Pickle’s in-house mastering engineer, Ryan Parker, donning his Laws Of Nature moniker, as well as Austin duo Glass Slipper.

Bittersweet melodies, pitched-out vocal samples and deep, M1 bass lines are all featured in the original mix of "You Got Me So". Its groovy, swung beats and dubby flourishes work nicely on a bed of garage-inspired production. Next up, Laws Of Nature take the controls for a modern, synth-drenched update that channels Disclosure at their funkiest. Glass Slipper fit just right with their stripped-back version that features re-sampled vocals -- courtesy of in-house vocalist Lisa Cork-Twiss -- and layers of organ riffs. Wrapping things up on the B-side is "Free", a jangling house number with classic-sounding piano chords and a rough and ready bottom end.

Opolopo - "The Laws of Nature remix is the one for me!"
Vanilla Ace - "Both Playless originals here are for me."
Lupe Fuentes (Inhouse Records) - "Perfectly summery tracks."
Graeme Park - "Damn good!"
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "This is pretty cool."

Al Bradley (3am Recordings) - "Had a flashback to being in the middle of the Hacienda dance floor in Manchester, circa '94!"
DJ Phil T (DJ Times / Bight Magazine) - "Wow … big splashy house with great vocals. I love it!"
Ken Liu (Headset Recordings) - "I'm loving all of these … fun, upbeat, retro-infused hammers."
Revival88 (Strictly House FM) - "Nice vibes … Playless always delivers. The Glass Slipper remix is my favorite."
Richie Roberts (The Dance Factory, BBC WM) - "I love the original of 'You Got Me So' – it's got all the underground vibes of an MK mix – but it's 'Free' that has really touched the spot. Perfect atmospheric piano house … this will be huge for my audience."
Tariq Ziyad (New Urban ERA) - "This is the kind of house that I can't get enough of … both tunes and remixes are top drawer."

Kohib / Kahuun - Kohib & Kahuun EP (Beatservice Records)

Bergen-Tromsø house alliance! Two beardy and nice chaps have put their heads together to collaborate, but not as a duo as one would expect. Instead Norwegian producers Kohib and Kahuun have provided a track each, and then have remixed each other’s respective track.

Kahuun is a part of the electronic scene in Bergen. He released his debut EP in 1999 on Paper Recordings, and has released a string of EPs on various labels. His early tracks were in a jazzy broken-beat style, but lately he's been leaning more towards four-on-the-floor house and techno. His contribution -- "Superduplex" -- is a wonderfully sprawling electronic composition that builds and builds with creeping layers of melody and percussion.

Kohib is an important part of the Tromsø electronic music scene, equally as a club organizer, DJ, and producer. His debut was on the Prima Norsk 3 compilation in 2005, followed by an album, a remix-album, and a string of highly regarded EPs and digital singles. "Dynamo Rex" is a prime example of Norwegian techno in Kohib's inimitable style. Filtered synths, motional rhythms, metallic percussion, and hypnotic patterns all give this track a trippy, late night quality.

The exchanged remixes show Kohib and Kahuun applying their individual production techniques to each other in an engaging manner. Kohib lends his icy precision and uncanny ear for melody on his remix, while Kahuun adds his rhythmic intricacies and knack for a mesmerizing, long, effective build. Together they've delivered an EP that is both unique and noteworthy, and a fine addition to the catalogs of the artists and the always dependable Beatservice Records.

Larry Tee - "Very cool."
Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe) - "Dope. I really love this."
Anthony Pappa - "Some nice tracks here that will be used."
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "'Dynamo Rex' is hot!"

DJ Enne (Electunes / Karmaloft) - "That Kohib remix of 'Superduplex' is nice."
ROBOT84 (Paper Recordings / Under No Illusion) - "Superb release … every track is killer."
DJ Nova (Rodon FM, Greece) - "When techno, (acid) disco, and house meet together in Oslo. This EP is fire!"
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) - "Dramatic and futuristic, techno from this part of the world has always been special and this is further proof. Addictive sounds across all these but 'Dynamo Rex' tops this extraordinary selection."
Joshua Jacobs (Music You Need blog) - "Kohib and Kahuun deliver us some fresh house goodness with this release. Serving up dark and deep vibes, with great synth overlay, penetrating bass, and ominous sound effects, these tracks are sure fire dance floor crushers during late night sets."

Anthony Mansfield & JP Soul - Ode To Moulton (Roam Recordings)

This latest release for Roam Recordings is arguably its most action-packed yet. The Ode To Moulton EP features four tracks of psychedelic and fun dance floor jams by studio mates and long time friends Anthony Mansfield (Hector Works) and JP Soul (Roam Recordings). The fire was lit under these two as the legendary Moulton Studios -- where their studio space was located -- was sold off to make way for overpriced condos (as is now all too common in San Francisco). Something about lemons … these two squeezed the last bits of juice out of that place and composed several releases, this being the first. The Ode To Moulton EP's title track starts things off with an intoxicating groove and crazy sounds 'swirlin’ atcha', while "It’s That Kind Of Friday" has a tribal feel that makes one want to go rave in the woods. "The Towel" follows -- it's a club stormer with an original disco groove teased in for fun -- and then "The Steam Cleaner" finishes things off in a big yet soothing fashion. All four tracks keep it upbeat and slinky for discerning dance floors, whetting the sonic appetite for more to come from this crafty duo.

Bing Ji Ling (The Phenomenal Handclap Band) - "Yeah, man … nice one. Raving ain't easy!"
Nick Warren - "Lovely vibes … I like 'em all."
Sleazy McQueen - "West coast rhythms and swirling synths programmed to melt faces!"
Adam Shelton (One Records / Visionquest) - "Top class stuff … I'm feeling all four tracks."
Ray Mang (Mangled / DFA) - "I will be playing 'It's That Kinda Friday'."
Flash Atkins (Paper Recordings) - "Yep, I really like these … 'Ode To Mouton' edging it on first listen."
Hollis P Monroe - "Damn, this is nice!"
Tim Paris (Marketing Music / My Favorite Robot) - "Hard to pick a tune in particular … it's a superb project in its whole."
Pete Moss - "'The Towel' is incredible but I'm also digging the rest of the release."
Severino (Horse Meat Disco) - "Yeah! Great package."
Ant Plate (Rhythm Plate / YSE) - "Top little EP that sounds like you guys had a new TR toy to play with in the studio!"
Pete Williams (Natural Rhythm) - "The dubbed out vibe of 'The Steam Cleaner' is my pick."
Chris Udoh (Tigerhook) - "I'm feeling this trippy, dubby vibe."
Tariq Ziyad (New Urban ERA) - "Funky analog sounds … nice!"
Simon Kirk (Stag Beetle Radio Show) - "A brilliantly original EP with serious attitude. 'The Towel' and 'The Steam Cleaner' in particular are real trips with sonics that will mesmerize. Well done."
